Just about anything you're going to order can be done using the vehicle's VIN. I've never needed to know an engine number.

Of course, if the engine has been swapped then all bets are off.

When you are ordering hard parts for the engines you may need that number... most things on our engines have three incarnations.... and sometimes when one changes then when the stuff next to it is replaced you will need the upgraded one...
I am thinking of things like Cams, followers, etc....

If you're ordering from anyone who has an EPC, they enter the VIN and it knows the engine number.

Thanks for the location of my ID# Unfortunatly It is not in the original Car
It's now in a 220D 1969 with 5 speed soon to be put in a 1969 22D that has a 4 speed now.
Its engine is not the original either.
