Used to tear down starters at work (auto electric shop) and the moment you cracked that housing open you knew if it was fried or not...smell of burnt windings and enamel just filled the air

I know that low voltage also plays havoc with solenoids. Seen quite a few stick in the engaged position because of low voltage.
