I have put 65,000 miles on my 1998 E300 TurboDiesel, and have averaged about 28 mpg, overall. That includes a few maintenance spills and fuel line leaking escapades. I routinely get over 29 mpg in mostly rural or highway driving, with the highway trips at 75 to 85 mph. Great car, but as noted elsewhere, it has some unpleasant idiosyncracies. Like bum glowplugs. Oh well. Every engine has it's faults.

Any MB engine you name of I can think of a particularly unique quirk associated with it.

Minor stuff like leaking head gaskets, valve seals, timing chains complications, distributor caps, plug wires, wiring harnesses, bent rods.

Just a simple puddle of piddling.

Those are because of the afterglow for the emmissions. Nothing with afterglow will last much longer, IMO

Lucky, me.

Heck, in NH they don't even rate the cetane levels for ignition quality. It's a toss as to whether you fill up clean, or dirty.

2.119 a tank. Wow, looking forward to < 2.00 a gallon.
The Shell station I bought "premium" from didn't have a choice. Premium was all that was available at it. Maybe all shell is "premium" and this station just had some new labeling or maybe it is only available in limited markets. I don't recall precisely where it was, somewhere between SC and NJ though. I have noticed that my car does do better with Shell than Mobil. Maybe they just use different additives.

Where are you located that the Premium is available??

I have never seen 36 ..but that is the number I quote to my non-diesel friends..

I have also noticed that at any Mobil / Exxon I've ever filled up at the fuel is garbage. I recently took a trip to SC from CT and the best fuel I came across was from Citgo. Even here in CT the best overall fuel quality I've gotten is from Citgo. And I use my Redline additive every tank

I still get 30-31 with the "summer" fuel. No change. I suppose nothing helps if I am driving at 85-95 and doing ITUs all day long.

My best ever was 30mpg mostly highway at 80mph. All highway with the cruise at 55 i'm sure I could get 35-36 as advertised.

I get ~27 - 28 mpg 99E300 turbodiesel almost 100Kmi

I also get high 20s about ~27 - 28 for combined city/hwy. I think 36 or 37 advertized is a myth. My car runs OK I just changed the MAF due to check engine light. Planning on GP replacement this summer, this is a preventive measure so that it does not get "welded" to the engine. If any GP does not comeout easily, I will leave it in there.

I have browsed through many threads, drawn upon the experience of others and myself. Taken notes of several recorded figures, and I've become confused.

The V6 M112 engine, conceived in '98, consistently averages high 20's to low 30's on the highway, low to mid 20's in the city. Even the ML320 is a frugal consumer.

These figures were achieved with average driving. Not WOT, slap around the bend, type of performance. But average( 70 - 80 mph hwy).

If you don't mind, I am reinitializing this thread. I would like to hear better numbers. At least 30% better than the gasoline equivalent.

Like I said.. in an ideal condition.. all highway, flat road at 55-65 we could probably get 35+mpg. I am pretty hard on the car with alot of WOT and sprinted driving so I am getting high 20's. Right now I'm at 402 miles with around an 1/8 tank of fuel left.

I'm at 500 with 1/4 tank left. Quite a bit of spirited driving. Also with the reprogrammed ECM

That's just the thing. This car is so dang fun to drive, and seems so eager to accelerate, that nobody will take it easy to get maximum economy.

The wife felt the acceleration was not good. Missed her gas cars that were quicker especially when passing. Therefore I had no choice but to get her the ECM reprogram. Now if someone tailgates me and there is room, I hit the gas and smoke the hell out of them.

EPA 'book' is a loop, more like a 50-55mph average, and certainly NOT 80mph. Faster = more power needed = less mpg...

Lower tire pressure will reduce mpg a bit, but No, not 20%. More speed = more power neede = less mpg...
