300SD/s350 - what do you think?

I am probably opening up a can of worms but would like some advice - I am seriously thinking about purchasing a 140 body diesel. I know about the 140 weaknesses and know what to look for in the body/chassis/maintenance records. I also know about the notorious 3.5 turbo diesel engine in these and the 126 cars. My questions are as follows:

1. If these engines have been "fixed" what exactly do they do to make the cylinder walls thicker and does this reduce oil consumption/wear? Is it a sleeve?
2. What exactly should I look for in the engine/maintenance records so that I don't buy a big POS?
3. Those that own this model car/engine - how do you like it?
