Tortoise and the Hare

Ever feel like you're the tortoise and everyone else is the hare while putting along in your diesel? Every morning especially now when it's cold, I creep along slowly while the engine warms up. People who are stuck behind me zip around in the other lane very quickly every chance they get only to come up on a stop light or stop sign and I pull up right behind them.

It always makes me think of the cartoon where the turtle is chasing the rabbit and the rabbit always runs ahead but then stops to take a break and then comes the turtle sure and steady to pass him as he pauses.

I know the feeling. Someone never explained to them about the timing of traffic lights.
Goes right along with creeping clear into the intersection to "speed up" the light and if you follow the car in front of you, close-enough-you-appear-as-one, running the red light.

Uh...yes, every day in my 240D, whether I floor the pedal or not, its still slower than the geezer next to me in his Cadillac.

Let this not sound like I'm complaining. The wife and I are looking and new cars, and my 240D looks better and better every time I walk back to it. I dont care what kind of new car you would give me, I'd still sell it and buy a W123/124/126

I have been very impressed with how much more power my 85 300D has compared to when I bought it. There is a wicked metered on ramp by my office that is way to short to get up to the 60 to 65 that people drive through town. The first day this car only hit 40 on this ramp and i thought I was going to die! (and lots of BLACK smoke) Now I routinely use the shift gates and wind it up to 4 grand before shifting. The car never leaves the black cloud anymore and gets up to 55 - 60 even on the short ramps with no problem. These really like the higher RPMs. Of course I only see 22 to 24 mpg but alot more fun to drive. A 5 speed manual would sure be thing.

Only when it's cold and I keep the rpm's well south of 2k. After she warms up I only get the usual tailgators around town. On the open highway I'm the one that is usually passing.
