Need 116 a/c help.
I know, we're in the dead of winter... but here in Central Californina, we actually made it into the high 60's last week... I did my searches and bookedmarked several links, and now my head is spinning. Although most remedies seemed to be for a 123. So this is what I've got... My heat works sometimes. I notice that sometimes I have to push the defrost button before the heat comes on, most of the time I have to switch on the "a/c" button to get the fan going, then I can switch the button back to economy. Sometimes when I start the car and I have left the switch in the Def, or lo, the fan will start up on it's own, but most times it will not. Sometimes just pushing any of the buttons might turn on the fan (but won't guarantee getting warm air, but come to think of it, the air is coming out of the center vents) Most of the times hitting def will get me heat. When I do hit the a/c button, I do not hear the clutch engage, nor does my rpm go down (the tach is working, so I assume the fuse/relay is okay) The a/c compressor receiver, dryer R+R expansion Valve was changed at 99361 miles (okay... that was 7/96) as well as the servo. So is this vacumm related? Do I need to check for cold solder joints? I wasn't sure if that applied to the 116 a/c CCS. And the Imperial/Chrysler manual seemed a bit over my head at this time...
Thanks in advance! Les

So your main problem is no ac right? If there is no charge in the system the clutch won't engage. The other problems I'm not real sure about, some could be bad connections, others like the center vents are probably vacuum problems.

Thanks, that makes sense. So many things were going batty with the climate control, I wasn't sure if it was connected or a series of things. I was also wondering, does the def and bi-level handle the heat issues and the auto hi and auto handle air and airconditioning and not heat?
Thanks

I am having exactly the same problem with a 1980 300sd but my air conditioning works well.
It is the fan on mine. It will now only work on "def" unless the air conditioner is on. Then, all the fan buttons work. For a long time, I could get it working on "Auto Low" by starting out with "def", but now that trick does not work. A mechanic looked at it a while back and said I would just have to live with it but here in So. Cal., I want a fan for air but no air conditioning until summer. |

I did more searching and found some online service manuals for our 116's Looks like pdf's of some of the pages. I'm going to study them this weekend and see if I can figure out what is going on. You can find them here. It's set up by model number. http://handbook.w116.org/matrix6.htm
