what parts do I need to order when replacing GP's on 300SDL?

I am wanting to replace the glow plugs on my new '87 300SDL this weekend. The light only comes on intermittently but I know the plugs are working by how easy it starts. I'm going to go the route of removing the intake manifold. Is all I need to order the intake manifold gasket and the six plugs? They list some air distribution gasket and I didn't know if that was for the cross-over pipe? Are there any other gaskets I need to order except for the one?
Thanks
David

You will need 3 gaskets for the intake manifold. 1 large oring where the cross over fits into the other pipe by the egr. A flat gasket for the crossover to the manifold. Also a manifold gasket.

When I had mine off I filled it with kerosene and cleaned all of the ege crud out with a cheap pipe brush.

Two things I wished I had replaced while I was in their was the temp sensor for the temp guage. Also I wish I had done that clear return line on the other side of the IP. It cost less than $20 if I remember correctly the sensor I was told ran about $25.

Also get some clips for the hard injector lines, all of the old ones will be very brittle. Brian C might still have some of the egr plate kits, his are nice and you can remove the valve all together. Or you can get another gasket and stick a plate in their and bolt the egr back on.

In my case, I only replaced #4 and #6. No gasket required.

Best Regards,
Jim

What parts are those listed as on fastlane Hattie? The "Charge air line to charge air distribution line" is the only other intake manifold gasket listed. Could you please be specific?
Thanks
David

Also, hattie, can't I just remove the EGR and out a thin metal plate then reattache the EGR over it?
Thanks
David

Yeah you could sandwitch a thin metal plate in between the egr. I started to make one out of a tin can, but my dad knew a guy who could make one up.

I was unable to get the large oring from Fastlane or Phil, I got that from the dealer it was only a few bucks.
Here are the Fastlane numbers I came up with:
Manifold to head
A8040-38904

Cross over to manifold
A8040-81368

I don't seem to have the part# for the oring anymore, but the dealer pulls it right up. You might be able to reuse the oring but it was getting kind of tired on mine.

Get a reamer

Get a glow plug reamer and ream out the holes before you screw in the glow plugs. Mercedes mechanics I know say it makes the plugs work better and last longer.
I did not use a reamer 3 years ago when I replaced glow plugs in my 84 300SD and the plugs only lasted 3 years. This time I used a reamer and it seems to start smoother than the last time.

Where to get a glow plug reamer

You can buy one from Performance Products or maybe from Fastlane for around $50. If you are an MBCA member you may be able to borrow one from one of the gearheads in your local chapter.

Went to the dealer today. Got the two o-rings associated with the cross-over pipe and the two small o-rings that go on the filter canister stem. I'll change the oil, replace front pads(w/ sensors of course), and have the rotors turned. They're still plenty thick.
Thanks
David
