Mileage (MPG) figures on a 220D, anyone still drive one??
Is there any 220D drivers out there??? I'm still looking at this nice/ok shape '69 220D I found, 4 speed. I was wondering mileage figures on this. I remember our old 240D doing pretty good, but I think the 220D would be better. Anyone know?

My old '73 220D consistently got 30 mpg no matter how hard I drove it. Great cars when they're in good condition. Be forewarned! Oil filter changes are a major messy PITA.

This the one with the vertical headlights? If so, there's one in the local PicknPull.

As the signature indicates, drove a '68 220D/8 for a number of miles. Was my daily commute on a 5-mile 4-times a day route for nearly 20yrs. It consistently got 28 to 30 mpg and this was all inside a small town. On the hiway it got 33mpg most of the time, and was driven at about 60 to 62 mph, as this was mostly during the double nickel days. Ours was/is a four speed also. 2.2 liters displacement does not make for a rocket, but the manual tranny is sure way better than a slush box. I got to the point over the 20 yrs that the oil change process was not messy at all. Was even done once in a white shirt, which had no oil on it at the end of the process!

[HJK]Apparently the trick is to drill and tap the filter canister so that you can drain the oil prior to removal. I was younger, poorer and had less time and space to perform the odious task, which usually was at the inlaws. They didn't like the messes I made in their driveway.[/HJK]

Average 36mpg, mostly 2-lane highway cruising. No auto anything.

Actually I never did any mods to the filter housing, although had thought about it. The trick for me was to partially loosen the main center bolt, but hold the cannister up and let the oil run out around the bolt. If done warm at least, the time to reasonably empty the canister is very short. Then finish loosening the bolt and drop all of it into the drain pan. A poly glove for avoiding dirt and grime on the canister is nice, but not necessary unless the car is a real leaker.

I picked up a 1973 220 D in perfect condition from the original owner with 140K on it. It's an automatic and I recently checked the mileage - hoping for something in the 30's. I got 27 in mixed driving - mostly highway. I was a bit dissapointed and came here to see if there might be something amiss - but looking at everyone elses numbers with the manual transmission - I guess that is an accurate number. Wouldn't you know that just as I got the thing home, the diesel prices in Oregon went through the roof! I'm paying between $2.60-$2.70/gal. I'm ready to convert to fry oil...

I drove a manual trans 220D about 75k miles. Always got mileage in the lower 30s but could get 35 MPG on a trip at reasonable speeds I.E. 65 MPH.

I drove a 1969 220D from 1972 to 1980. When I got it it had a new (not rebuilt) engine installed by the Mercedes dealer. It got 46 miles to the Imperial gallon on a hiway trip cruising at 60 to 65 MPH. This was a 4 speed transmission model. No air, no power steering or other power robbing accessories.

I got about 30 in the W115 with auto tranny. Never really measured it, as it usually broke down between fillups!
Check the timing chain for stretch if you have low milage --- late injection timing will reduce both performance and milage badly. So will dragging brakes from sticky calipers (meaning it's probably time for rebuilds on the calipers). Wonderful cars if not rusted away or abused! Peter
