Exclamation Almost New '82 SD !!

Saw this in our local AutoTrader today.
1982 and only 37,000 miles, amazing if true.
I still think the seller is smoking something at that price though
300SD

I guess. WOW, what a price. However, if you had to buy a Like car today, with like quality--what would the car run??--$60,000. And its only got some 30K miles on it.Almost like new. Maybe thats his angle for asking that price. A like new MB for $22K.

True enough, but I'm always a bit worried about cars that have been used so little. Components will still deteriorate over time regardless of mileage. Seals dry out and bearings get brittle just due to the weight of the item they are supporting. Rubber items age and crack. If it has been used little and often with regular servicing though it might be just fine and it would still be a great bit of automotive history to own.

For $22k (Only $18kUS ) I could make my SDL pretty darn new as well

vs. USD

I think that would be about 18,417.98 USD. Lot's more than I've got, but if it's all true, where you gonna find another one like it? I think if you are paying around that much for an "old car" a few thousand either way is not "much". At that age and mileage he probably does not have a lot of comparables. He just needs to find a buyer that's smoking from the same pipe he is. Sorry for all of the " " 's.

For $22k you could get a:
1999 W140 S320, S420, S500 with 50k-70k miles and a warranty.
For a few grand more you could get a 2000 S430 or S500 with 70k+ on it.

If I were looking for a daily driver for $22k I would consider a newer S class.

If that car is really a 37k mile car it can't be driven much or you will be killed in resale. 5 years of daily use and you have a nice $4k car.

He states "or best offer".

Maybe I'll offer him $8K and see if that's the best offer he gets??

$8k is a fair price, he probably will get pissed but I bet it is the best offer he gets.

That's what I thought. Unless he puts it on e-bay, he won't get a better offer than $8K, and, I'd give him $8K for a vehicle with 30K on the clock.

You could drive it while you do the head gaskets on your other two!

Make him an offer you never know, he might come back with a counter offer of $9k; or something like that.

These cars are hard to sell, you need to find the right kind of buyer to pay a lot of money for a nice old W126. I have seen pretty nice gas W126's rotting on car lots for months.

Yeah, be my luck that this one needs a head gasket as well.

Yeah, I should call him. Leave the offer sit there for a couple of months. You never know.

I wonder what mods would be required on a Canadian vehicle? Could get quite costly.

Get the vin it probably came from the US.

I'd make the offer and let it sit on the table. I bet in 6 months or so you will get a call.

On an '82 I doubt there would be any differences between the Canadian and US models as far as safety or emissions are concerned and I fairly sure the Speedometer would be in both kph & mph back then.

Stoney Creek is only about 50 mins from Buffalo so you aren't too far away.
Go for it !!
Besides it probably has that seat trim you need for the SDL

There's an '85 300CD in the Dallas paper today. 18K original miles, stated it was 'properly stored'. Only $22,000 OBO.

I wonder what the seller means by "fully certified by MB". Does he mean the mileage has been verified through regular servicing at an MB dealership? If the mileage is accurate and the vehicle is in truly immaculate condition, then $22K is a modest price for the right buyer. I've heard the rubber argument before, but let's face it, if cracked rubber is all that's wrong with this car, then what's the big deal? Rubber is only in a few places on these cars, most of which are easily servicable. Besides, maybe the rubber has been taken care of and one shouldn't assume it's cracked and worn out just because the mileage is low. I think a detailed inspection and a test drive would tell the real story. If I was in the market and the choice was a truly mint classic MB or a mass-produced, plain-vanilla new car for the same price, I don't know about you guys but for me it would be a no brainer.
