preparing to drop SDL tranny...

Has anyone in here actually done it? I know Hattie is also planning to in the near future, so I'm sure he'll find this thread useful as well. I will be dropping the tranny to replace the rear crank seal which is leaking rather severely since I switched to Delvac 1 5k miles ago. I think that it had always been leaking, but not nearly as severe as it is now. Please, I do not want to turn this into a synthetic vs. dyno thread, in fact I plan to keep with the synthetic not only because of the added protection but I hate dropping the bellypan to change the oil every 3k miles.

What else should I replace with the tranny out? People have mentioned the front pump seal, but will it be a radial seal just like the rear main? I don't want to have to take the tranny apart, so I won't replace it if it adds too much more labor. How much time would I be looking at to R&R the tranny? To actually do the seal that shouldn't take more than 15 minutes. Will part of the exhaust have to be undone? Do you guys have any pointers for me?

Thanks
David

Want,

Just be careful when you "DROP" the transmission, you don't break it.

I'm assuming you mean you are going to remove the transmission. It would help if you tell us what kind of facilities you have such as a lift, grease pit or just car up on jack stands to advise you on time required.

Yeah I will be keeping an eye on this thread. It looks like a pretty simple job, off the top of my head you have to unbolt the bell housing, the trans mount, and front flex disc. You will have to disconnect the shift rod as well. Since you have a lift and trans jack it should be an easy job. I will be on my back on the driveway; thats why it can leak until May.

While the trans is out you should do the mount, and that shifter bushing. Look it over for leaks and seal what you can. Also check the drive shaft support bushing ect.

Sorry PEH, I'll be using a lift w/ a transmission jack there. Do you guys think I could get it down, replace the seal, and put it back up in an afternoon?

Thanks
David

Want,

I don' t think You can R&R the transmission AND do the rear engine seal in one afternoon. Don't you have to R&R the upper oil pan to remove the rear main bearing cap to replace the seal? That's more than an afternoon's work itself. Maybe the 603 engine is different from the 617 I'm use to working on.

I R&R the transmission in my '80 300SD and it took more than 5 hours but I don't work very fast.

Does that transmission have the B2 piston issue? That would be a great time to do the upgrade if it does. Flexdisks of course if they even have any real cracking. Transmission mount. Is there an "O" ring on the dip tube? Shift linkage bushings? (Those little gromments ). And check the wiring fro the shift solenoid. Tends to go bad.
And I will be watching the thread too. Although I really don't want to pull the transmission from mine.

Hey Hattie and Alan, I'm coming on strong! Up to 225k, but I'll probably drive the SL to StarTech so I won't get the big trip there to help. May be driving it all over the place looking for a replacement for daughter's 300e.

PEH, the 602 is different from the 603 in that aspect. It's a radial seal just like the front seal, so the seal takes no time at all really to replace. I've never heard anything about the B2 piston on a 603. The only time I've heard about it was with a gas car I think, but what would be symptoms? I'll do a search now on that one.

Are the bellhousing bolts a pain to get to on a 603? usually I think those are the worst part about R&Ring a tranny. Oh yeah, trying to get everything lined up right is a close second.

Thanks
David

It looks like a very simple trans to pull. With a lift I bet you could get it done in a few hours, the rear main takes a few minutes to swap out.

i know im 6 years late to the party but i did mine alone the other day in 3.5 hours on jackstand on my back and working alone with a floorjack witha piece of 2x12 on it... i will be buying a trans jack to reinstall it or i will be an assistant. wasnt very hard but like anything "new" theres a learning curve... i didnt drop my exhast at the procedure recommends so on the pass side i just used around 2 feet of extentions on my ratchet.. i spose if u have smaller hand u may get it up in there and not need the extentions... big issue now is rebuilding the trans myself in my garage, a job ive never done.
