The Etiquette of Bumping Threads....

(I can just hear the collective moaning....)

Sure don't mean to beat a dead horse here, but seems to me this bumping threads thing needs clarification.
What exactly are the rules about bumping threads?
What is ok, and what is not?
Can we please have a common understanding to avoid any future unpleasantries?

If you didn't get an answer the first go around bump away. Or some people bump real old but good threads back up for new thoughts and for new members to see.

This forum bumps down threads pretty fast because of the traffic so it needs to be done more.

The lesson is:

Just don't bump 50+ at a time. That kind of stuff looks like a 'denial of service' attack to web admins.

What I ment by that is on some forums a thread will sit on the first page for 6 months. Here you get a day maybe.

If my question goes unanswered I will occasionally 'bump' a thread, but I rarely just say, "bump". Rather, I try to add something to the post, or something I've tried recently. That way I'm bringing it to the top again, but adding something more, perhaps information that someone might need to answer the question.

peace,
sam

Randy has it right.

Bump all you want. Just don't bump 50 in one day.

How about throwing something in there about only bumping your OWN thread, not someone else's? (From 4 years ago)(that had 0 replies).

I hate to see bumping formally restricted to one's own threads (and I don't think I have done that on this forum once..... I can always think of something to say instead of just "bump"...LOL )... but I sure agree that something strange was happening to those really old ones with no answers being brought forward...

Certain old threads need to be bumped occasionally due to their great info. Some examples of good ones to bump every other month, itallian tune up, there is a great newer thread about a rear end switch on a 126 that has great detailed info. By bumping classic threads once in a while it keeps new posts on the same topic down a bit and keeps the knowledgable from having to retype the same thing. It can be tough to search and is often eisier to just re-ask. I cant say making stickies out of these classics is that great either, nobody wants to see 15 stickies.

This is a very subjective question that would probably best be gauged with a dipstick.
