Removing hazard light switch on 1982 300D
It doesn't work, you can push the button back and forth, but there is no click, so I'll have to replace it, how do you go about removing it?

Very very carefully pry it out. You may want to use a pin to try and get a little slot opened up to fit something bigger in. I can't stress how carefull you need to be not to scratch the wood.
After you get it out take it apart, it may be fixable with just a good cleaning or so.

Joe,
First, remove the console wood...you don't have to pull it all the way out, just pull it back and up enough so that you can get your fingers underneath the wood. Wiggle a finger in underneath the console wood and push the switch out from the backside. The switch has some springy metal fingers on it's front and back that keep it from popping out in normal use. You might have to press one of those fingers in to get the switch to release from the console wood. FWIW, that switch fails because stuff gets spilled (soda, coffee etc) into it. Good luck.

Does the wood counsel need to be removed first. (If so, any tips.)
If not, does the hazard switch just pull out? Thanks for any help. |

Arent these like 124's? the wood comes out and all the switches are in a plastic housing. Anyone know for sure?
Repost your question next week and I'll remember to check one when I get back to work.

If it's the original switch, I would also be concerned about it being brittle. That's another reason to loosen the wood panel in the console and push the switch out from underneath. Prying it can break it. Of course, if you're going to replace it anyway....

It is best to remove the wood trim to remove the switch. trying to pry it out, you can peal some of the laminate off the wood trim.
On a W123 car. 1. Remove the ashtray by pushing down on the spring tensioner at the top of the ashtray and rotating the ashtray top towards the rear of the car to remove. 2. Inside the ashtray cavity, you wil see 2 screws that hold a metal frame. remove the screws and remove the metal frame. The frame has the cigarette lighter wires connected to it. Pull out ( rotate it out by moving the passenger side out first) the frame and on the drivers side remove the connection from the frame. 3. Slide the wood trim piece towards the rear of the car about 3/4-1 inch. there is a plastic probe that sticks into the center consol trim that holds the back of the wood trim in place. DON'T BREAK THIS PROBE OR YOU WILL HAVE TO BUY A NEW WOOD TRIM PIECE ( or a 240D consol and cut and glue the probe area onto your wood, don't ask how I know). Once you slide it back far enough it will allow you to move it upward. I then rotate the wood trim towards the passenger side about 45 degrees. 4. On the front and back of the switch are 2 tabs that hold the switch in place ( examine the new switch to see what I mean) . Press these 2 tabs at the same time and push the switch up and out of the wood trim. Usually pull off the wire harness to the switch first. This may require a slow and steady force to make it disconnect, a little rocking helps too. Now is good time to clean all the gunk that has accumulated in the center consol area. 5. Install the new switch and the wire harness. 6. Insert the rear probe into the hole and slide the wood trim forward. 7. Install the frame, don't for get the electrical connections. 8. Install the ashtray. 9. Your done. Dave
