Yep, that's what we're doing. BMW with 60,000 on it, Porsche with 100,000, Honda Civic with 70,000 (170,000 now!). And it's not like it's cheap, the BMW and Porsche are nice and in good condition.

Money and time! But if you do all the work yourself, it can still be pretty cheap.

Yup, you can drive some nice cars that way; but it's a better value than buying them new.

Meh different strokes. Right now after 5 years of damn near constant wrenching on old cars I'm enjoying not having to do much. This is the first winter in 5 years that I havn't driven a barely running $500 POS.

But probably in a few years I'll find myself a nice older MB that needs some loving. I'm already looking at 300SEL 4.5's online....

Right on Hattie! Dig deep why don't you... do I see a making of Money Pit II?
While you're surveying, how about a 6.3 perhaps?

A little bit of everything, I'm not sure if I want a project or a newer SL or maybe something of AMG flavor.

I've greatly enjoyed reading this thread. I share many of the feelings expressed here. My 82 240D slumbers in the garage for the winter, and slumbered in there most of last summer (bought a country property and I figured I had enough to keep me busy, plus I own a reliable 96 Camry wagon and a 92 diesel Land Cruiser wagon that was very handy hauling stuff to and from the country place). The Cruiser will need some axle seals replaced this summer, and some other PM.

I bought the 240D from the second owner about 10 years ago, it had come from Arizona and has not seen winter (I'm in the snowbelt). It had close to 200,000 miles, and now has 225,000 or something (I only drive it in the summer usually, not for long distance trips). I've wrenched a bit on it, but I acquired it in very good shape (dealer serviced) and have done good PM on it.

Owned a 92 Volvo wagon for 2-3 years and got tired of wrenching on it so sold it and bought the Camry. Had to spend 2000 on it in the first year (had been somewhat neglected, and bad luck on my part), now it carries my ass without worrying me during the long winter months. I've had my share of hobby vehicles over the last 10-15 years, but have always had a reliable Jap daily driver vehicle (until the Volvo - but I only bought it because I couldn't find a good Camry wagon at the time).

For some strange reason I keep looking at the forsale ads locally, thinking of getting some other "hobby" vehicle to fool around on (maybe a Saab, or BMW, or Cressida, or W126, or if I save my money, a 911). I'll be retired in a couple of years and figures I'll have time on my hands. But will I still want to wrench?...

I look forward to taking the Benz out this summer, and driving it to and from the country place. Not having driven it for a year will give me some fun driving it again!
