So is it possible for me to tap or press out my diesel cylinder sleeves myself or must a shop do it? Rebuilding my CLEAN ebay bought 79 240d with a tired engine. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

I don't know what kind of tools you have.... but I suggest you find a copy of the 616 engine manual so that you don't mess up anything along the way...
There are lots of things which a person familiar with American or Japanese engines will find strange... the manual has the warnings.. while the info on this forum may allow you to do all the job I know that lots of the warnings are missing... The manual shows a homemade tool for use in pulling them out... but the real problem comes after you have put the new ones in and you need to grind the top to a very close tolerance... but you can only determine that with it in the block... Do a search here for ' skinnerbox' and check out the online engine manual there... it is for the turbo but the sleeve situation applies to you. |

Have you adjusted the valves yet?
Just trying to think of anything simpler than an engine rebuild that might cause "tired engine" symptoms. Ken300D

I just assumed you were already committed to rebuilding it...
If you have any doubt , or want to postpone it , then 'Diesel Purge' and setting the start of fuel delivery by the 'drip method' should be added to the valve settings. While you are ' there' at the 'valve setting' check for 'chain elongation'. All these processes are well described in our archives, using the words I have put 'and' around..... Since you did not start with many horses in the first place... getting back 5 or 10 can really be felt when driving around. |
