Climate Control -- No Fan or Intermittent

Hi,

I have an '85 300D Turbo with 227,000 miles.

Since buying the car, the A/C never worked. However, the push-button fan controls have recently become less and less responsive.

When the car is running, pushing the fan buttons on the console appear to do nothing. Strangely, when the engine is off but the ignition is on, all the fan controls work great. I can switch between Econ/Normal/Bi-Level/Defrost settings and Max/Min/Auto fan speeds. Once I start the car, the fan shuts off and I can't operate anything.

Occaisionally, the fan stays on and the controls keep working.

Stranger still, while driving, the fan can suddenly jolt to life for no apparent reason. It tends to work for about 10-15mins, and then dies again.

What needs to be fixed or replaced here? I have re-soldered the push-button control unit, replaced the tube running to the Temperature Control sensor, and removed the blower fan to fix the brushes.

Please help,

nhsu06

This was the subject of a post of mine the other day, but sometimes it's in the ignition switch, it cuts the power to the climate control when it's in the starting position, and sometimes the spring doesn't push it back all the way to the run position, try turning the key a tiny bit back to the left and see if it's works...worth a try anyhow

fuse holder deforms through heat leading to open circuit

your fuse holder may have deformed from heat, not easy to see by eye but results in intermittent then permanent open circuit because fuse contacts not pressing on fuse. Push a piece of alu foil in fill the gap and see if it helps . if it does then install new higher rated fuse holder. Dont leave foil in there it melts!
