Just tired of the crap...am I wrong..??

I was just over at the "other" board looking around. I am just realizing how frickin' pathetic it is. We come to these boards to seek advice about our cars. More often it is about challenging issues and how to tackle them. Some of us are mechanics and others are not but have some good experiences to share about specific topics. Generally, if you have a problem with your car you can come here and ask and get good help. We will do everything except turn the wrench for you. (some here have offered though)

My point is, I just read a post about some guy needing advice on where to take his car for an oil change. And in another someone asks how much it should cost to fix a few simple things under his car.

I could go on but then I would just be blowing more hot air. Am I wrong here for feeling like these guys are pathetic? I am nowhere near the ability of others on this board but at least I try. I realize people come to this board for different reasons. I just don't know how to feel about it.

Should I go on medication?

You probably need to be on medication just due to the extreme number of vehicles for which you are responsible...

Everything I know about my Benz I learned here from the good members willing to teach, from books and other sites. If the posts I see get repetitive or the pop up blurb doesn't interest me I just don't open the post. It's not a hardship for me to see them posted. After all is said and done this is a finite topic and eventually(a long way off I'm sure) there won't be anything new to say.

Leather,

It is funny you should post that. I was in another window trying to get a quote for car insurance from progressive. What a nightmare! That is 20 minutes of my life I will never get back.

Anyone know what it is like having 5 F&%^$ing cars on an insurance policy?
(2 bikes on another)

I'll give someone one of my cars if they can guess how much I pay in car insurance a year.

I don't think they are pathetic! There are people out there that cannot change a light bulb because they are not at all inclined. They don't have the foggiest idea of mechanical aptitude and they feel stupid often times, and develop an insecurity left feeling vulnerable.

Many of these same people often try, and try very hard to do what is to you, very simple. I give them credit for trying! To call them pathetic, makes you look kinda pathetic for not understanding their weakness!

Well, I'd take you up on that offer but I would start a family problem if I brought home another car!

"Anyone know what it is like having 5 F&%^$ing cars on an insurance policy?"

I have 5 cars also. All insured. I use 21st Century Ins. They didn't have a problem with that. I ain't gonna tell you how much I pay either!

And don;t worry about some fellow whining about looking for a place to get his oil changed. There are some people that will never figure out which end of a wrench to pick up. Let them support an INDY, just tell them not to use JiffyLube and go on to the next dumb thread.

Busy Benz,

you are missing the point. THEY are NOT trying! I would give them credit for trying but they are not.

One poster in particular starts nothing but posts about how his car looks and debates about the color or which model is better. Seems he would rather spend $500 on wheels and bling bling instead of a worthy repair. Then when the repair NEEDS done complains about how much it costs.

DIeseldiehard,

I see you are from CA. Godbless you on the insurance thing.

Personaly I think that people who cannot change their own oil should not own 20 year old cars. I don't feel these cars are practical or make sense to own if you cannot do most of your own work.

Notice I say cannot, not choose not to. Nothing wrong with farming out the unpleasent things like trans fluid changes, yuck.

Other forums can get old because they lack knowledge and pretend not to, or simply do not care.

Just my 2 cents, flame away I'm putting the suit on.

I have the suspicion that the other board has many younger members with vehicles that are significantly newer and much more complex than the folks on this board.

Accordingly, the knowledge base for repairing those vehicles is simply not there and the capability of the individuals on the board is far less than the folks over here.

Furthermore, when you have the capability of spending 15-20K on a M/B, you have the capability of paying someone to fix it when it breaks. You can therefore spend your time on more important matters such as the size of the new wheels or the color of the brake calipers.

There is no satisfaction in the actual repair of such a vehicle by these individuals. Remember, when you get done with the repair, the vehicle looks exactly the same as it did before you started the repair.

We get a lot of personal satisfaction in keeping a 20 year old vehicle in good running and good looking condition. They don't.

Actually the other board has members that are younger but their cars are as old as ours. They are just hand-me-downs from mommy and daddy. Not that I care, just that they look at them more as status than good, reliable, easy to work on transportation.

THIS IS THE BEST DISCUSSION BOARD....EVER.

This begs the question of how do they maintain them? Who does the front suspension work? Who does the valves? Who does the rear springs and diff mount? Who tackles the climate control issues? Wheel bearings? Brake rotors? Front bearings................................?????????????

The certainly can't afford to have a mechanic do all of this work?

Do they just turn up the stereo and ignore the "issues"????

I do not even know what other board you are talking about, But I certainly understand the issues about which you speak.

I am an older guy, and I have never posted my fleet, in my signature at least, not that I recall.

2000 Mercedes Benz ML320
1995 Plymouth Voyager SE
1988 Suzuki Samurai
1982 Mercedes Benz 240D
1977 Dodge M880 4x4 Military Pickup
1975 Travco Motorhome
1973 Land Rover
1971 VW Bus

1973 22' South Coast Sailboat
1979 26' South Coast Sailboat
1975 Sea Ray Ski Boat
1989 Suncruiser Party Barge
19?? SkeeterHawk Bass boat

2004 Century 35 hp Diesel Tractor

All currently registered and insured.

All have their own special needs.

Not that I always do all of my own work, but I feel that one should at least be able to converse about the repairs needed intelligently with the person who may be performing the job.

That has been my biggest complaint with any dealer. Convincing them that I might actually know what I am talking about.
