grease for the door hinge?

I was reading the maintance skedual for the car... it speaks of lubricating the door hinges.. How would I go about doing that. can not see a grease fitting anywhere.

Go to the auto parts store and get a spray can of White Lithium Grease. Squirt it into the hinge pin/bearing interface. If you use it on the latch wipe off the excess from the door jamb and door so it doesn't get on your clothes as you get in and out of the car.

This is good for hood hinges and many other applications. I also have a tube of it in my tool box. I use it on electrical connections to keep off corrosion, on light bulb bases, lots of places. I don't use it on electronic connections, there is a special dielectric grease for them.

Ganaraskas suggestion is valid for most cars, but NOT for a 123 Mercedes. These cars have grease fittings for the door hinge pins. For my money this is the best door hinge ever put on a car and ALL cars should have grease fittings there.

The fitting is a flush fitting that requires a needle on your grease gun. Many years ago when I first started driving these cars, I bought one of those very small pistol grip grease guns and a needle attachment. I put the needle on the grease gun and left it on permanently. I have only used it for the door hinges and for the same type grease fittings that are on the special u-joints in my old Ford 4 wheel drive Farm truck.

You can get one of these small grease guns and the needle at most good size parts houses or a farm store.

Good luck,

To add to what Larry said: You can get the grease gun extensions at Wal Mart for a couple of $$$ bucks. They snap into the end of your regular grease gun. I bought one a week ago.

Your best bet is to go to Harbor Freight and for about $6 you can get a small, plam operated, plunger type greese pump with a pointed nose on it. You can also find them at stores that sell chain saws. It is the same type gun used to grease the roller tip on chain saws. Don't get the rubber needle tip adaptor for a regular zerk style grease gun. They won't stand the pressure need to hold the tip into the fitting.

Clean the fitting and make sure it hasn't been painted over. Use any type of general purpose grease. You have to push the gun very tightly into the fitting since it is not like a zerk fitting gun that holds onto the fitting. Give the gun a couple of hard, quick, pushes into the fitting using your palm on the plunger.

I learn somthin' new...

...every day about these cars.

I was looking for something completely different when I found this thread.

I've replaced I-don't-know-how-many check straps and never noticed this on the hinges. Gotta go look.....

Is this grease hole present on the W126 as well? Larry does not specify what kind of grease to use? Any recommendations?

Yes, it's on the W126 as well. Here's the "original" version with the correct tip. (Complete with "made in Germany") It has, for some reason, become a little pricey but comes with enough grease to last the lifetime of the car plus some:http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200308549_200308549

It's literally right in the middle of the hinge. For a description, "a flush washer with a raised, spring-loaded BB in the middle". It's fairly small. On mine, the passenger door must have had the original grease as I had to dribble a little kerosene in the top of the hinge to loosen things up before it would take any fresh grease. But afterwards, what a difference in smoothness!

Yea, Sam!

Good to know our preferred cars -- w123 and w126 -- have these. I'm gonna go through them all.

Actually, I'm gonna suggest John go through them all, since he's taken on the primary mechanicin' role until the second week in November when I get through with my current job.

So how's your fanny lift holding up?

Sunny

The "fanny lift" is holding up great! Now the car drives so much more smoothly plus the main thing I've noticed is driving is so less tiring on longer trips. I believe it's because the car is so much better balanced.

Now you're making me REALLY jealous that we haven't had time to get with Max and do that to both our daily driver SDs and my favorite D. I don't know if I'm even gonna let John read this....

Sheesh... I gotta make some time. In this lifetime, not the next!!
