Hope this one's not too bad.. as it's a part of the annual MOT (roadworthiness) test for all cars in the UK at least 3 years old.

Mildly overheating the 617 won't hurt it. That's the beauty of the engine, all cast iron, and it makes it more durable than the aluminum/iron engines. This thread certainly has taken on a bit silliness, I thought mentioning things that will destroy ALL engines was a bit on the pointless side.

Every new diesel owner should learn this: diesels need clean air, clean fuel, heat and work to do.

Dirty air -> shortened engine life.

Dirty fuel -> plugged fuel filters (dirt).

Wet fuel -> plugged fuel filters (ice), diesel bugs, shortened injection pump life, drippy injectors.

Diesel bugs -> plugged fuel filters, shortened injection pump life, drippy injectors.

Drippy injectors -> blown glow plugs, carboned up pre-chambers.

Blown glow plugs -> hard or no start, worn out starter, dead battery.

Idling and Babying -> carboned up pre-chambers, rings and cylinder top-end, shortened engine life.

Lugging -> overheating, carboned up cylinder top-ends. You try to run up a couple flights of stairs with a clothespin over your nose and your mouth taped shut.

Clean and dry fuel means a happy engine that starts and runs well. Four bills for a new injection pump should be more than enough incentive. Clean air and good driving habits means a long life engine. And change that oil.

They are great for flowing air, I use one on my road/drag racer, but they will allow more dirt in. As pointed out above, allowing dirt into the engine will shorten it's life. K&N filters are documented as performing as I described.,

I would be surprised if you get better mileage with a K&N rather than the stock filter.

Not being a menber of MercedesShop with all the knowledgeable fine folks could possibly kill one in short order...

Makes me think of a seller telling me he had done perfect maintenence on the car himself. When I ask to look under the hood he didn't know how to open it right away.

My father-in-law is a tractor mechanic for the last 40+ years. He said he rebuilt a diesel Massey-Ferguson tractor engine for a guy. The guy put the motor back in his tractor himself, and didn't hook the air filter up properly for some reason. He started plowing first thing in the morning. Come lunch time, he shut the tractor off for lunch. It never started again, because it was worn out! 4 or 5 hours of working hard in dusty conditions sanded the new cylinders/rings/pistons down enough to loose so much compression it wouldn't start.

More down time and a couple thousand $$ later he was good to go again. I believe the customer had my father-in-law do the WHOLE job this time.

The notion that a lot of "around town" driving and lack of highway driving is harmful to a diesel is an interesting paradox. I've ridden in MANY diesel taxis in southeast Asia - some MB, some not. Many of them see heavy city duty - and that includes long periods of idleing, lots of stop and go traffic in the city, and rare highway jaunts. Yet so many of these taxis have well over 400,000 kilometers (250,000 miles) on the clock and run amazingly well.

I was in a W124 250D taxi with approximately 500,000KM on the original motor and transmission - no rebuilds. The driver said that the car sees the highway maybe once a week, and is mostly putting around the city, running for 10 hours a day or more. Yet it idled and ran so smoothly and quietly, and did not smoke - no black film on the rear of the car either. Overall it appeared that the car was in excellent running condition.
