Soy Diesel Update FYI

I received a newsletter posting from the fuel co-op that supplies our farm and many others here in the upper midwest:

Re: soydiesel

"We have been supplying soydiesel at a 2% blend since 2001. The cost of 100% soy runs around $2.50 per gallon. When blended at the 2% rate, this has added 3 cents to the price of diesel fuel, until now. The federal gov't has enacted the biodiesel blenders credit which credits $1.00 for every gallon of soy blended - or a $2.00 credit for every 100 gallons of 2% soy. And, with the price of diesel and soy being so close now, (diesel is at around 95% of 100% soy), there is an interest in purchasing 5, 10, and 20% blends. Currently we have been limiting sales to the 2% blend due to the tightness of the soy supply. As more soy production facilities come on line, we will be pleased to offer stronger blends. Soy diesel is not yet available at the pipeline terminals and continues to be handled separately."

I guess that's good news...

I'd sure be nice if we could kick up the oil crops and not depend on soy, but I'm enjoying the fact 100% soy biodiesel is costing me the same as pump diesel at $2.39 per gallon. Needless to say, winter's over and the Benz likes the biodiesel straight up.

i live in harrisonburg, VA and just got 300 gallons of B99.99% delivered with the federal subsidy from holtzman oil (they only deliver if over 150 gallons). it cost me 1.79 for heating oil blend and $2.19 for road blend. they said they put in 1 gallon of diesel and 1 gallon of dyed HO in each batch but after asking the guy, it sounds like it is actually straight up b100 (and they just charged the difference) and you cant tell a difference between the two! The $2.19 is pretty close if not less than 40 cetane crap-dino around here!

It runs awesome and makes me hungry to smell my tailpipe or backup on the driveway!

I don't know if they would deliver as far as where I am.....plus I would have to have a means to store that much.........as I have no tank on my property. Unless they deliver it in 55 gallon drums...which I would doubt.

Dont believe they do drums, but they will fill them. If you were really wanting it, you could have it delivered to my property in drums that you supply and pick up yourself (promptly ).

Does B100 soy diesel have a cetane rating? What is the equivalent in dino oil? If I use B100 can I add power serve to boost the cetane rating the same as dino?

Biodiesel has a higher cetane rating than dino. It runs higher than 50 I believe, where the dino dregs from the pumps around here do not print a rating on the pump anymore, suspect it runs about 40.

So, my Dieter should run better on B100 soy than dino, right?
If so, I'm going to buy a big barrel and pump and get some out at the farm. Maybe since it's veggie (technically) the barrel won't need EPA approval.

Yep. My engine is smoother and quieter running B100, and smells a heck of a lot better too.

I googled "cetane rating biodiesel" and found this link: http://www.ext.nodak.edu/extpubs/ageng/machine/ae1240w.htm

Cetane of biodiesel is about 55, WVO about 35-45. When I burn straight vegetable oil, I add a double dose of Diesel Fuel Supplement (DFS) in the white bottle.
