I'm just saying, I think that if one took a 603 and a 617 and were both subjected to equal maintenance and abuse, the 603 would show higher compression. From what I have seen the 617s tend to wear out by mid 300k miles or so. Members here are even reporting low compression on one or two cylinders with as little 200-250k miles. Remember Peyton, the wagon that never got dirty? I know we could point to individual examples but it seems there are more high mileage 603s than 617s.

Thanks
David

I am a total newbie to this forum,

I drive a VW TDI, and am looking at a M-B diesel for my girlfriend

I found a 87 300D with 236K

it has been sitting for over a year, but started up fine. has a little rust and a few scrapes, but the carfax is clean (one accident that the owner told me about)

my questions:

how do I check the head # (i want a "22") correct?
where is the vac pump located so can check for the "one with bolts"

the guy is asking $2600. I was thinking of offering $1800, but now think $1500

I have yet to drive it, only saw it running. no bad leaks. motor sounded a little rough to me. but I have 0.00 experience with M-B diesels. only my VW and my Dad's boat.

thanks in advance for your thoughts

Welcome to the forum.

I don't know your girlfriend, personally, however, as a general statement, most women do not appreciate a diesel powered vehicle. The reduced power, increased noise, use of diesel fuel, cold starting issues, sluggish cold performance, etc. all combine to result in a very unhappy woman.

Be very cautious before you go down this road.

The vehicle that you are considering mitigates many of these issues, but, unless she is like us, she won't appreciate the vehicle and the maintenance issues will probably not be to her liking.

If the vehicle has not had any repairs to the engine, it will most certainly have the #14 head.

If your girlfriend overheats this engine, you can kiss the head goodbye.

Ain't that the truth! I taught my girl to drive manual transmission in the euro 300D and she wound up driving it for a few months.. she drives my E300 on occasion and still doesn't appreciate them! Women

Well, the story here is my wife has never driven anything but MB diesels, she never drove a gasoline powered anything! yup, that's right! you just have to train them (hopefully at an early age!

And then there's Jessica, who was so lucky to find a 300CD like her boyfriend's 240D in primo super original shape. I'm glad to have had some influence over these youngsters!
OK boys n' girls - START YOUR ENGINES! klatta de klatta de klatta!

BrianCostello, before you buy the car you probably best find an Indy that can go over the car looking for whatever it needs, maybe a compression check too, and he can get the head# while looking it over.

The cost for a new #22 head, including pre-combustion chambers, valves and their components, hydraulic lifters, cam, etc, will run at least $3000, more closer to $4000. The bare head last I checked over two years ago was $1900. To get an idea about used, try this site: http://car-parts.com/
