That's a little high..
I just got my '85 300sd and at 70mph, it's about 3k...I understand the '85 has the 2.88 but that still sounds a little high.

are you certain the tranny is in final gear (1:1) ?
Maybe its time to count the shifts. I also doubt it would have a 3.93 or similar differential in it, but strange things have been known to occur.

Yeah Brian I noticed that too on the specs chart! These older original charts were likely printed with some errors, but most info I see there seem to be on the mark...

I would expect the car to burn rubber if it had a high gearing in it. I had a turbo engine installed in my '79 300TD with its stock 3.46 (or was it 3:65?) rear end and I could peel out if I goosed it. Now running a 3.07 to great benefit. I probably should have installed a 2.88 (as I did in my '83 300D) that makes for a real highway cruiser! Loss of acceleration is really minimal especially if you tweak the ALDA and have a good running engine (ie. no timing chain stretch) it will still take off and run almost like a gasser! Swapping a taller ratio differential is the best thing one can do to a turbodiesel, provided you aren't using it for taxi purposes or hauling ceramic tile like I did once (800 lbs in the rear of the wagon, whew!)

Thread in last week or so about a guy swapping his rear end for a gassers. Must have been an easy change or he would have vented in some fashion. I would try to contact him as he went with a really tall ratio and seems to like it. Also he was smart enough to get the speedo head out of the gasser to eliminate playing with speedometer calibration. Think it was like about a 2.47. Extreme in my mind but he sounds happy. Claimed a six mpg boost in milage as well. would be interesting to find if he has verified this by some reliable method as well. Donar was a 300 series gas if I remember.

There are a couple of threads on the installation of a 2.47 diff from a 380 or 420 gasser installed in the SD. The fellows who have done it seem to like it quite a bit. It's quite a tall ratio and the vehicle is definitely more suited for high speed highway runs.

[QUOTE=dieseldiehard]Does that mean its buzzy, as in geared differently or what ?
................................QUOTE] High rpm's is the prob'. The engine was real noisy before the new engine mounts....lot's quieter now, but engine sounds very busy at 70 mph. Would like to drop it to 3k at 70.

got that, screaming. Well, diesels are a little noisy but hopefully the revs aren't what was stated, else something is really out of spec.
re: search, did you see this thread? Well - I have found the MB diesel "easter egg" or 3.07 to 2.47 gear swap 300sd 100/k or (there are others, too) Did Diesel Geeks Swap To 2.46

Here is one of the original threads by Dieselgeek:
1982 300SD Gets 2.47 Diff with LSD! I believe that is all of them: dieselgeek Breckman99 rbullard are the three who have done it. All of them think that it is outstanding. |

gears
i agree with brian. the chart is probably for 100MPH. i think that the rear ends will all pretty well interchange. the ones in the sdl have fins on the bottom of the diff for cooling. the 240s are plain. one is presumed to travel at high speed the other not. according to some threads here recently, perhaps the ones from the bigger cars may have slightly bigger flanges but can be modified to work on the 123 chassis.
