My engine is bleeding
About 2 months ago I replaced my front crankshaft seal and oil pan to put an end to my leaky engine. Well 2 weeks ago (just after I spent 2 days power washing my driveway) a little 3 inch around oil spot appeared. That oil spot is now 4 feet wide and my engine leaks like crazy.
I suspect this is the rear crankshaft seal that requires the engine to be pulled to be repair. I really hope someone can tell me otherwise. ![]() |

Dont go pulling that engine quite yet, there is a few little things that I know of that you can check that would leak in that spot.
1. The oil feed line to the turbocharger - Where is connects to the oil filter housing. 2. The oil pressure line - That connects to the oil filter housing just above number 1. 3. The oil cooler lines - Where they connect to the oil filter housing. 4. The oil filter housing itself - The gasket may need replacement, or its more likely that the bolts need tightening. 5. Make sure that the top of the oil filter housing is not loose (where you remove the filter) 6. How is that valve cover gasket doing? If its bad, oil may be getting down that way. Make sure all of these are withing tourque specifications before expecting this oil leak to be the rear main seal. |

If that is a picture of the joint between trans and engine then you probably do have a rear crank seal leak...
However, it is also possible ( but extremely remote ) that the ball plug in the end of the engine , but under the trans bellhousing ) is leaking... This is the hole which , if you take your engine out, you would take out and ream to clean your main oil passage. But, since your front seal went enough miles to need replacing I am assuming that you are not too surprised that the same thing on the other end of the same engine is now leaking... when you corrected the front one you probably raised the pressure going to the rear one. |

Yes it is coming out where the engine and transmission connect.
Today I put a stainless bowl under the car to see how much it was leaking. It leaked out about a spot around the width of a half dollar in 7 hours. The oil was very thin. This is when I remembered that it was low one day before work and all I had left in my garage was the Mobil 1 I use in my truck. I will be doing an oil/filter change tomorrow hoping it will solve the problem Wish me luck. |

That leak rate is with the engine not running... and the rate might increase... you will need to watch it closely...
You might try putting something like Rislone into the oil when you change it out.. there are some of those types of additives which claim to be able to swell gaskets.... |
