Thumbs up PS return hose leaking - which style of hose needed?

Well my PS return hose is seeping and before it gets bad I'm going to replace it here. So my question is can I use some high temp/pressure 5/8" OD hose (like you'd use for a trans cooler) or does it require some other specific style of hose?

It looks like a basic low pressure rubber hose...

I could be wrong but even though it is a return line it is still a hydraulic grade hose used for high pressure. I replaced my hoses by taking them to a place in Garland called hose-fast (hydraulic supply company). They made me an identical set in 20 min for $30.00 each.

I am sure there is some place in Arlington that could make you a hose, or I know there is a place in Grand Prairie on either Main St. or Jefferson. If I remember correctly it was on Main on the right side next to some body shop.

The hose I'm looking at I use for ATF coolers, they run usually around 50-70psi idle and around 180-220psi WOT... and last for years. I've used this same line when I installed the PS cooler on my F150 but was unsure of if it'd be mkay for Klaus.

Also, it's just secured via two hose clamps... not with flare fittings or anything of that nature.

I do have some Oil Cooler lines laying in my garage that I scored for $2.24 to be rebuilt, so any info you can track down would be excellent.

If its connected with hose clamp it could only be under that much pressure. I say go for it. Maybe keep the original hose in the truck for a while just in case.

The return hoses are under close to no pressure and high quality hydraulic hose will work just fine. I got enough to do both from Fastlane for about $18, Fastlane sells real thick walled heavy duty stuff.

I plan to get the thick stuff from Fastlane (like the OE) but until then, I can't drive about leaking hyd fluid!

I need a mess of other stuff from Phil but that's on the back burner right now as I have to get my AC fixed ASAP - it's going from warm to hot quick!

I replaced my return hoses on both my cars recently with some hardware store grade fuel line of the same approximate size and no problems or leaks. Do not wate your money on expensive hose. The high pressure lines are a completely different story.

Using fuel hose or anything else not rated to carry ATF will allow you the pleasure to do the job over again in the near future (couple of months). Fuel hose (even that for higher pressure injection lines) will react poorly with the ATF/power steering fluid and swell up, crack, leak, etc. This is independent of pressure rating. It has to be compatible with the fluid it is carrying. BTDT, learned the hard way.

Any good auto parts store should be able to fix you up as long as you know the length you need and the size of hose.

I purchased some 3/8" today, I'll post up how it works. It's dark and the bugs are coming out... dark nor cold scares me but being eaten alive is not something I'd like to deal with.

Also, it was a specific PS Pressure hose despite it was for the return. It was about 30¢ more per foot than the ATF/oil cooler line.

3/8" ID is just a lil too small. So, tomorrow I'll be out and about to get a tad larger ID hose.

Did get the valve cover...er... cam cover gasket changed today. Appeared the one on there was OE from '85! One less oil leak for Klaus.
