Rethink that statement......it is completely backwards..

too much fuel in a diesel creats high EGT....too much fuel in a gasser lowers EGT

Too much fuel in a diesel is just as bad as too little fuel in a gasser...

Everytime I ride in my friends E300D then go back to my SDL the SDL feels like a dog! So I figure if the 300SD is slower my SDL should feel pretty good when I get back into it.

I plan on changing all of the fluids and filters, glow plugs and adjust the valves right away. The tires are cracking so I will throw on my winter tires I bought from Brian, the tires on those are like new so I will be good. I will save the 14in wheels because snow tires are cheaper for them when I need them.
I know the battery is shot but I have a very good OE one from my parts car that will be just fine for awhile. Also one of the rear tall lights is cracked and the armrest is shot but again I have perfect parts sitting in my basement.

After that I will go over the car and see what it needs. This car is pretty rusty so it isn't worth putting much money into.

I'm confused theirs a nice 350 on ebay? MB doesn't spec a 10w-30 oil in any of these cars btw.

I believe it was 130K or about.

It was offered by a very reputable seller. I'm sure he is kicking himself for not going with a reserve.

Boy was I tempted...................................................

BTW, Tom, I assume that 10W-30 was a typo. You don't want to run 30 weight in the 603.

I'm not advocating it, but the manual lists 10w30 for certain temperature ranges.

Thanks
David

Yeah I meant to indicate the complimentary comparison there.

With the diesel you can be rich and not suffer power (assuming you aren't pushing max EGT's)
In the case of the ALDA on a diesel you can just adjust it a tad rich instead of needing to have that perfect fuel/air curve like a gasser makes it best power at.

Well I got to drive it and everything is not so good. The suspension is tight it was gone through not to long ago and is tight. Also most things seem to work even the sunroof. The trans shifts fine as well; but and this is a big but the engine has tons of blow-by!

It looks like a steam engine when I pull off the breather hose! Oil is leaking from the air cleaner and turbo seals because of the pressure. It also has a skip, that could be a few things maybe a dead cylinder. But it fired right off after sitting for a month with dead glow plugs, and drives fine, it is no 603 but has plenty of power. I took it up on the highway and it drives just fine.

The massive amount of blow by bothers me, the car needs a battery and oil cooler lines along with glow plugs. The owner wants $500 for it, I think thats to much. I am thinking $200, it really is a beater I would just drive it till it blows.

I did the block the breather hose and see how long it takes to shut down test. I got 4-5 seconds.

Hattie, it's probably worth $1200. if everything works on it. Especially if it starts right up and runs down the highway without any issues.

$500. is a steal.

Hell, I'll buy it for parts at $500.

Even with all of that blow by?

I mean
battery $80
New oil cooler lines, made local $80ish
New engine mounts $35
New filters, oil some cooling hoses $100

So $800+/- in decent shape driveline wise?

I guess what else am I going to get that drives and runs decently for $800? But that warm skip bothers me. It could be a dead injector, poorly adjusted or shot valve or a dead cylinder.

Maybe monday I'll stop down his office and buy it monday. The blow by bothers me but it did fire right off without glow plugs. It was probably 100+ under the hood at the time though.

To use the term I use frequently..

Drive it into the ground

It will probably run another 50,000 miles with low compression/blowby like that. $500 is a steal especially if all power functions work and the A/C is cold. Adjust the valves and drive it.

It's worth $500.

Now, if it won't start at 20°F. in the winter, you may be a bit upset about that. So, it might not be the vehicle for you. You have to assume that the compression is a bit low if it has all that blowby. So, there will be starting issues without a block heater.

Your call.
