If you ever see any cryo claims....

I'm a Metallurgical Engineer, and these cryo claims are a personal pet peeve. There is virtually NO evidence that cryo treating helps common engineering materials achieve higher strength. There is a slight stress relief effect which can also be achieved by heating.

There are some very rare alloys which do benefit from this type of treatment, but I repeat, they are very rare alloys, none of which are commonly used for automotive applications.

All of the "research" you may find regarding cryo treatments come from people who have something to gain from the research. They either sell the equipment, the service, or both. Save your money.

I heard a similar story years back where some dude made a cooler like machine that could reach temperatures near absolute 0. One of the main things he froze were engine blocks for those Indy car like go-carts.

SteveM - Is it true then that cryo freezing brake rotors DOES NOT make them last longer?
thanks for the insight

Brake rotors - save your money.

Most brake rotors are made of plain-jane cast iron alloys, which will not see any benefit from cryogenic treatments. You will find people with anecdotal evidence that it "works", but no serious university or scientific research supports these claims. Only the claims of the cryo vendors and their "buddies" keep the myth alive. It's also a pretty decent marketing technique. When pressed for details, their explanations of the strengthening mechanisms gets very un-scientific and vague.

The alloys which do benefit are high-alloy content steels (mostly stainless steels) which cannot complete certain metallurgical transformations at room temperature. For these alloys, the only way to ensure complete transformation is to reduce the temperature well below room temp.

Save your money.

Cryogenics makes razor blades last longer, but keeping them in a pyramid works even better. Some people here should remember that. Actually cryogenics is not cost effective to increase fuel mileage when a cheaper way to go is to tape magnets to your fuel line.
