I pulled my perfect original seat (116.120) apart, stripped the rust from the springs with muriatic acid, painted them with Rustoleum and had the upholstery shop add foam between the springs to firm everything up.

They feel great now...Bert

I don't consider the spring assembly for the seat cushion INexpensive.
World Upholstery lists it at $307.20 (WB126) on their website I believe.

List price from MB is around $370, I think.

Makes "out-of-the-box" repair more attractive.

Thanks guys for all the info, this forum is great I'll sure try many of the sugestions, but I must admit reupholstering the seats is a little too stiff on the wallet now, I wonder if modern merc seats are the same way?

probably similar... but buying one of them used would be stiff too.

Lucked out wiwth parts car

I bought my 85 300 D this spring, (through Ebay) and I think there was more buying pressure on them at that time then there is now.
Well, I am really quite happy with the car. It really runs and drives well, though it has some rust. Then I bought a parts car from the Nashville area. It has almost 400.000 on
it, has a bad crank as it can't turn the pulleys anymore. The damper pulley ate the crank and the PO kept it running for 100,000 more miles using a titanium based putty.
Anyway the body on this old 82 parts car is just perfect. No damage, no rust, none anywhere. The interior is trash except for the front seats. The passenger seat was like new and the drivers seat much better then what I had in my 85. Interior colors were the same, though the stiching pattern is a little different. So I switched the passenger base to my front seat and it works good. Adjust wheel for back rest rake is on the drivers left and that adjustment used by MB for seat height adjustment is about as easy to operate as it was on my 54 Pontiac Starchief coupe. That lever is rather well hid, but I don't ever recall using it on my previous Mercedes.
I have not tried to start the car although I am toying with doing that. I might just wait until the mosquitoes are out bad and give them a treat. I'll bet it will smoke after sitting out in the sun for about the last 4 years. I would love to get it back into running condition, but I bought it on a "Bill of Sale" the Kentucky title had been turned in and the car classed as parts. So if any of you are looking for body parts, there is some really good iron here in central Indiana. The car is an 82, W123 4 door 300 TD in very, very dark blue with cream and red pinstripe. It looks almost black. Glass is all good, PO said the windows and locks all worked. I plan to dismantle the engine and salvage what I can and put it under the bench. I would not save the block. Interior color is tan.

"If it was easy everybody would do it!"
