300SD engine won't shut off

The engine (5 cylinder, 617.951) on my '81 300SD won't stop running when the key is turned off. It quits only when the "STOP" lever on the engine is used. Has anyone had this problem and how do I fix it?

Thanks, Rod

Go to the SEARCH facility/titles only/key in shut+off

There are many hits.

Here's one that may help.

Won't STOP

My 85 did that a year ago, It was the vacume line on the steering wheel lock behind the ignition switch. It was real fun to get to, did all the vac test and could not figure were the leak was, brown tube would not hold vac. Finnaly got my big fingers up by the switch and after a half hour of !&$*@^# I saw the broken peice of vacume line conected to the switch.
Change the tube and problem solved. I am posting a new thread to ask how to get steering lock out mine is bad and key wont turn.
Good luck.

OK guys, thanks for the comments. Actually, when I posted that inquiry on the failure to shut-off I was unaware that the system was vacuum controlled. I discovered that the next day by tracing the problem thru the ignition switch (easily visible when the control panel is removed) to the control valve on the injector assembly. After checking the switch and finding that it functioned ok ( using a 10 cc. syringe to pull some vacuum), it was evident that the leak was thru the Y near the fuse box thru the other tube which goes from the Y junction to the center control console. The shut-off was OK when that line was plugged at the Y. Eventually I discovered a loose vacuum connection in the center console.
