The rockers are painted. They aren't suppose to be painted. You shouldn't have anything to worry about though, think about what the paint would probably look like if it were original!

Thanks
David

rockers

i am not so sure that painted rockers aren't correct for that car.

for repaint evidence, look at the edges of rubber trim and chrome trim. if those were removed for the repaint then it probably was an expensive repaint and therefore better chance of high quality. also look at the edges of the door and door opening for masking lines and evidence of overspray past masking. also look at door seals and trunk seals and anyplace for peeling paint. the factory paint almost never peels, i would probably say never as an absolute. also on that era mb there wouldnt be any orange peel in the factory paint.

btw...

nice looking car from the pics. it looks worth fixing ,if it doesnt have any bondo in it. (check with magnet at the usual places rust form such as bottom of doors, rockers and wheel openings. on that model i think also above headlights were a place to look.)

rockers

checked my mb buyers guide and the rockers are correctly painted body color. the black rockers came with the 123 body. it is supposed to make them look slimmer in the middle, i think. also the rubbery stuff resists rock chips a lot better too ... maybe 2000%.

thanks. i found a little rust in the trunk... There are a few places on the body with surface bubbling but nothing major. I plan on draining the tank and cleaning out the fuel lines and pump this weekend. Thanks again for all of the info

running! and died...

nope, it's electronic. We drained the tank today, installed a new battery, changed the fuel lines and turned the key... presto! started right up! However, after running for a little while, the engine suddenly stopped. The temp. gauge seemed normal... everything seemed normal, but it would not start up again. I'm wondering if maybe there's a problem with the thermostat? The engine felt really hot... is it possible that there's a switch or something that cuts off the engine when it gets too hot? I don't necessarily trust the temperature gauge because the car has been sitting for a while, and i don't know exactly what the PO connected/disconnected. Any suggestions on why the thing would be running fine and then die?

Is the fuel pump running? I wonder if it seized up? You will have to make sure that it's humming when power is applied or you'll have to remove it and clean it out then hope it works again.

Thanks
David

Aldiesel,

With the electric fuel pump running, there should be fuel pressure and flow even if the engine doesn't run. Loosen a fuel line close to the engine and see if fuel comes out.

the fuel pump hums and is definitely pumping... i checked it at the manifold just to make sure... the car was idling really well and then nothing... it just cut off. It would turn over but wouldn't catch... almost like there was no spark. It started fine when it was "cold," but after running for a while it just died.

Do you have spark now? What about the points? Gas + Spark = Combustion = vroom, vroom!

Thanks
David

got spark... not enough

we replaced the coil. That solved the problem, but it's a $10 coil from Advanced auto parts. So, i don't think it's getting the amount of spark that it needs. It cranks up and runs but runs rough. Also, I drove it around the block and the car has hardly any power. The timing is probably off. Next weekend I will get the Bosch coil and replace the spark plugs and points. Then I'll go from there.

Yeah, once you get the proper coil on there it should run much better. I think you'll have to hold off on timing it obviously though until the right coil is on there.

Thanks
David

dont

forget to check the rotor. i had a 280e that would start up and run pretty well for a few minutes then gradually lose power til it wouldnt run at all. after checking and changing everything under the sun it was discovered that the rotor looked fine and fit fine but was a little short!!! no good. new correct rotor presto it ran fine.

also check to be

sure it is delivering fuel where it is needed. if it sat for a while there may be a lot of junk in the tank and plugging the tank sock or the filter.
