Torque head w/ valve adj?

I was recently speaking with a local 'indie', a guy about 60 years old who is teaching his son the ropes. He seems rather proficient and claims to have worked at MB in Germany. He has the accent and his name is Werner, for whatever that's worth. ANYWAY... ...he said, on the subject of adjusting valves on my 82 300D turbo, that to do the job completely that I should torque the head while I'm in there. I countered with, ".. do you mean check them and maybe tighten any that were not to spec?" to which he replied"Or perhaps some might be too tight and need to be loosened."
It is my thinking that this would not be needed, that if by doing anything but maybe checking and tightening to specs would be asking for trouble. Any thoughts on this? THANKS Matt C.
