Request for 87 300D W124 wiring help

Hello everyone,

I had the wire harness in my 87 300D go bad, and had a mechanic who flaked halfway through the job, so I'm trying to put humpty dumpty back together again...

So we have probably 90% or so of the harness reconnected, but there are a few things which we can't figure out. The first is a wire which is coming up from outside of the car through a hole located behind the passenger side floor air conditioning duct near the front of the center console. The wire is about 18 gauge copper, is coated with thick black insulation, but is not color coded. My previous mechanic cut this wire when pulling the old harness out. Can anyone tell me what this is? I've been through the 250+ page electrical troubleshooting manual, but I haven't been able to locate this one.

Another question is a box above and behind the ignition key switch which is labeled VDO and has a six pronged plug facing towards the driver. I see this plug on my old harness where it seems to be a supplemental harness taped into the main harness. My guess is that this is the alarm system, and not critical to hook back up. The ETM seems to confirm this. Am I right?

Thanks, and I'm sure to have some more questions as they come up. I'll appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Thanks,
Richard

I'm not sure about the wire you described under the passengers floor, but if you have a multi-meter you should be able to see if it has continuity with ground. The box behind the instrument cluster labeled VDO with 6 connectors on my car has I believe only one of those six connecting anything and it connects the Hall effect speed sensor which connects the climate control fan motor (fan speed slows as car speed increases) and may also connect the cruise control too!

I can't say for certain but if you are talking about in front of the passenger side front seat then it sounds to me like where the o2 sensor wire comes through. Can you provide a pic of it? Are you sure it is not some type of aftermarket stereo wire?
