Temporarily need a 40 mpg + banger--any recommendations?

#%^& I wish I hadnt tanked my 1983 240D! That was one economical car!
Meanwhile until I get my 300D finished, I need to get my hands on super small 1200 to 1400 cc banger for the commute to work which is killing me ...hopefully stick and no ac, just a chair with wheels.
Cars that come to mind are the Ford Fiesta and the Honda CVCC..anyone got any recommendations?
