Towing a 240D with a Manual trans?

Picked up another 240D and need to tow it about 500 miles on a car dolly.
I really don't want to pull the rear driveline.
A freind insited that I'll burn ou the trans... I don't agree!
Can't I just throw it in nuetral and go like heck?

what do the experts say?

BTW.. just pulled a BMW 325I for 500 miles in nuetral with no problems.

Worry not. If it's a manual, put the thing in neutral and pull it home. I've retrieved three different cars, two of them manuals. All survived...even the 5-speed...and they all were pulled for 200+ miles at highway speeds as well.

You are killing us Randy. What's the story with the 5-speed! Last I saw you had just towed it in!

*psst* have you found any more hidden 5-speeds for sale?

Sorry, no mysterious 5-speeds. This is the tranny that's in the Euro I bought up in Ft Worth last April which BTW, is currently decorating my Mother's driveway (no, I won't tell you where she lives).

As some of you know, I bought the farm in May and since then have been spending practically every weekend up there, fixing things up. Little to no time for anything other than driving my Benzos these days...and boy, now am I ever glad I did all that work on them two years ago. Anyway, I promised myself that I wouldn't do the 5-speed thing to my wagon until I'd completed getting the SDL's issues sorted-out.

My wagon has been like a dream on the 80 mile trips up to the farm, pulling my little pig-cart trailer and swilling gallons of WVO with barely a complaint other than wanting the occasional fuel filter replaced. Only this last trip did she start making a little squeaking protest, asking for a set of new belts. She got 'em tonight, along with a new alternator (I never really trusted the one in there after the fiasco with the local rebuilder) and a scrub job on the radiator.
