Was there a N/A 300D in 1987?

I went to look at a 1987 300D but it did not have the turbo designation on the trunk. I could not get under the hood so I don't know what's there but I thought they only made the 300D Turbo in that year...anyone know if it was made in normally aspirated version as well?

yes, NA 6 cyl engines are around, Euro models I presume.
The engine would be typ OM603.912 mfg between 86 and 1/89 or OM603.913 mfg 2/89 - 6/93

In the U.S. we only got turbo cars. Most likely the emblem had been removed, quite possibly because of body work or a repaint. But in other markets the naturally aspirated 603 was a much more common engine. The standard taxi in Europe for many, many years was a 124 with a naturally aspirated 602 diesel coupled to a five-speed.

No, a 602 is a five cylinder, 2.5 liters. We got it in turbocharged form in the 1990-1993 300D 2.5. In Europe it was sold as the 250D, and was the quintessential taxi.

The equivalent four cylinder diesel was the 601. We got that in the 201 chassis - think 190D. All the 601/602/603 engines can be thought of as cousins. Similar design and construction, even many shared parts. You just got more cylinders (and displacement) when opting for the 603...

When my father bought his (now my) car, he requested that the emblems be left off the trunk. He liked the simplicity of simply having the 3pt star on the back and nothing else. Reportedly, the emblems are in his shop somewhere ... I'd like to put them back on, but I'm pretty sure I'll never find them. Besides, it's kind of fun to go to gas stations and have people frantically tell me not to put diesel in that car.

Thanks to all who replied. As it turns out the car was a 300E not a 300D as the ad had stated so the reason it did not say turbo on the back is obvious. I just missed it when I looked quickly at the back as I was standing knee deep in weeds and was worried more about getting ticks on me than checking the model during the quick check-out. The seller contacted me to inform me that the ad was in fact in error and it's a gasser after all

On another note, I removed the "E300 Turbodiesel" badging on my 1998 W210 after one of the letters fell off in a car wash and like it much better without it. Each one is a peel and stick letter and I removed them using a soft popsicle stick to pry them away from the trunk lid and cleaned up the glue residue using goo-gone. I think the car is much cleaner looking "badgeless" too.
