Non-functioning odometers

Alright, this is my biggest mercedes pet-peeve.... non-functioning odometers. Seems that this is more of a diesel thing than a gas thing, but don't know why. I've seen several diesel cars that I was thinking of perhaps purchasing, but every other person would give me the "worked until last week" lame-ass excuse. Why don't people fix them???? Its not hard to replace or fix!
