1977 300d with tranny prob

I have a chance to buy the above for $1000, with a lead on a transmission for $500. Just wondering if this would be a good start for a first Mercedes owner....

If more information is needed, let me know. All I know so far is the car is in great shape, Park works, but the rest of the gears act like they are in neutral.

Okay, I now have more info on the vehicle, so I thought I would post it:

Known issues.
1- windshield has big crack in it on the passenger side.
2-may need a new battery for the winter
3-sun roof is a little sticky....needs cleaning???
4- air-condition does not work at this time.
5-small rust spots (golf ball size?) on the feander corners
6-automatic door lock does not work on drivers door (vac problem?)
7-when i go throught the car wash (touchless) water leaking on the back window. does not leak any other time.( hand washing. or rain )(needs new gasket)
8- 1 head lightburnt out
9- slight fuel leak on a injector nozzle. o-ring????
10- couple of small cracks in the dash.

Good things:
1- tires are pretty new. 2 seasons maybe 10000k on them???
2-replaced all glow plugs
3-new alt.
4-new belts
5-great interior
6-130000k only
7- good straight body

$1000 for vehicle, with a contact for a $500 tranny. Is this a worthy purchase for a 1st Mercedes, or will I just run into more problems than I want?
