Which gearbox is in the late 240's? 722.3 or 722.4? I think all the 126's and later 123's had the 722.4. Maybe they just kept using the older unit until around '83, when the 616's were out of production? My friend's '79 wagon starts in second, unless you push the pedal to the floor, and it grabs first. Feels quite normal... I don't think there is a malfunction. Next time I work on the car, I'll check out the actuator and see if it holds vacuum....

My '83 had a 722.1xx unit, with no mechanical linkage, just a vacuum modulator and an electric kickdown. It always started in first gear, until last week when it broke. My new unit, a 722.303, starts in 2nd unless I punch it off the line.
