You did what???

The number two most stupid thing I've ever done while working on a car happened today. While troubleshooting a no-shutoff issue on my buddy's '79 TD, I started the car with the oil-pressure line to the gauge disconnected. What a mess. Anybody have an extra driver's-side, tobacco carpet laying around? The interior on this car is pretty pristine, so it would have to be in nice shape.... Please pm me if you can help me on this one.

Thanks,
Jay.

Battery cables.

Wired up a battery backwards. On a customer's car, no less. VERY bad day.

I took it down to the carwash and sprayed it out real good, but I leaned through the window when I started the car, then went to playing with the mityvac. Looked inside to check the connections at the ignition switch and almost cried. Pretty good-sized pool. Maybe a little more than a pint. The carpet was completely saturated. So I shot degreaser at it, vacuumed. Repeated these steps. Repeated these steps a few more times. Took it to the carwash and sprayed it until I ran out of quarters. Came home, hosed it down with degreaser, scrubbed, rinsed, scrubbed, vacuumed (again, many times). The woman who owns the car is not oil-smell friendly. For the time being I took the palomino carpet out of my parts car, and told her I'd try to clean the tobacco carpet again, and if that doesn't work, I'll get her another carpet....

Long ago when I was working in a repair shop while in college, the owner of the shop and a couple of us "mechanics" picked up a customer's car from his house to take it back to the shop for work. On the way to the shop we stopped off at a local bar and stayed too long. Between the bar and the shop one of the mechanics (who shall remain nameless ) got sick in the customer's car.

A friend of mine used to drive a tow truck. He once towed a car from a gas station that wouldn't start after the owner had stopped for a fill up. He was towing it from behind with the rear wheels off the ground. He failed to notice that the front wheels were turned sharply. As he drove off...the front of the car swiped several gas pumps, a trash can, a pole.....

I was told that brake fluid is good at removing that terriffically black oil.
