Interesting Diesel...

http://sacramento.craigslist.org/car/90296731.html

It says it's a one owner vehicle, but the license plates are the "new style". Calif has gone through 2-3 different types of plates since that car was new...

I might consider something like this if it wasn't so expensive ... if the 40 mpg is true that is!

Cathy

It looks to me like it has SIX injection lines going into the engine....I'd wonder if it really does get 40+ mpg, I guess it depends on the engine itself and how heavy the car is... What kind of engine is it?

I believe that is the 2.8L I-6 that Nissan/Datsun used for a short time.

I never knew they put a Diesel engine in a Dodge. If I did, I would have bought one.

I did see a Dodge pickup with a Nissan Diesel engine in it. It was for sale but rusted so badly, it was beyond saving. I think the seller junked it.

That is awesome! I would love to have that, but of course there is no way to afford that. A two door diesel Dart. How wild is that!
Does anyone know much about these?

I bet it could!

Get 40+ on that old tank. Sure you could on a one way trip, Flagstaff to Phoenix, 160 or so miles and you drop 6000 feet. lol! Even then you would probably need a stiff north wind to push you over the Mingus mountain grade.

IIRC correctly in the early 70's Dodge had the option of a Mitsubishi 6DR5 diesel Motor. I ahve seen several and a searrch confirms this. My freind put a M- 6DR5 in his Fj55 Landcruiser and added a Ray-Jay turbo ...cool and economical. He got 20+ mpg.

well

i was driving back then. i dont think that the diesels were ever offered in the cars. only trucks i think. i was thinking it was a mitsu engine. chrys i think owned 30% of it back then or so.

i think that 40 is simply ridiculous but in the 20's is very likely.

in the sixties and seventies darts were made in spain under a name something like barreros. they were outdated bodies and most ran diesels. dont know what brand of diesel, could have been mb. mb's were offered as optional engines in a lot of european cars back then but only in europe.

Darts were only good if they had a slant six, because those things ran forever.

well

it is true that they ran forever. but i had one and i could hardly describe it as good. it handled like a pig on ice. the brakes were the size of saucers and wore out very fast, and the slant sixes tended to drink oil while running like a top forever after a hundred thou or so. and the rear ends were so weak i had to change mine at less than 100k.

still for their day, as you say, the engines were very respected.

i heard that the engine was originally designed for use in army six by sixes. the main bearings were the size of cantilopes. the only engine that has bearings bigger than a benz diesel. and they weighed probably 700 pounds. the 273/318 v8 was considerabley lighter. to go in snow you had to have about 300 pounds in back and then the headlights were knocking owls out of the trees because of the weak back springs.

I believe you are referring to "Car Talk" on NPR. Unfortunately, Click and Clack do not favor diesels.
