Found the source of smoking....where can I get an EGR blocking kit.
So I was running RED LINE cleaner directly into the pump.... I was using the throttle cable to change the speeds and I opened the throttle all the way and I had to RUN because the engine compartment was filled with BLACK SMOKE. I have never seen that in my life; pretty scary if you ask me.
It was all coming from the EGR valve tube that comes back into the AIR BOX. In other words, the car would smoke since all that crud and crap was coming back in to the engine. I want to block off the EGR valve ASAP. Does anybody have any kits for sale or know where I would be able to obtain one ? Thanks

i think
i think the egr valve runs off vacuum...
and once the vac gets going it sucks the vavle open or closed or something.... so just plug the vac line going to it... |

![]() Oh yes, RED LINE is the stuff to use. At this moment my brother is running down the block getting his 190D since my car does not sound like a diesel. Literally, it got rid of the "click clock" sound. Let's just hope it stays like that.

I wish I knew about unplugging the vacuum to the EGR valve a long time ago. The car feels like it has a turbo added and the smoke is GONE. All these days I have been trying to solve the issue and it was just a simple EGR VALVE. I noticed that as soon as I plugged the vacuum line on the EGR it would automatically open the flap into the air filter. No wonder the car felt underpowered....it was running on its own emissions all the time

EGR is evil.

look in your golf bag. i have heard that the tee fits into the hole left behind by the vac line. this is urban legend of course because defeating the egr is against the law and no of us would do anything to flaunt the laws of the usa.

For me compliance is moot. My EGR is blocked
But the car isn't running registered or roadworthy yet ![]()

Just leave the golf tee in the line to the valve. The valve can't open and all EGR is eliminated.
If you don't like the look of the valve and want a cleaner look underhood, the kit will do that. I'll be offering a new set of kits early in 2006. As usual, I'll need 30 people to keep the cost down, so, once per year is probably sufficient to achieve this. |

If you want it to still look stock, you can put a BB into the line, then reconnect it.
And if you're running SVO, you don't need to worry about emissions. |

Hey,
I removed my EGR, for testing purposed only of course. The whole inside of the valve was full of crap. If you remove it and clean it out real good you may get it working again. Danny

I will never reattach the EGR VALVE again. It's kind of weird since my brother's 1984 190D does not have one but mine (1985) does.
I will tell you without exaggeration. The car has about 100% more power. (literally). I have no idea what was going on with the EGR but the flap was opened all the way as soon as I turned on the car. ![]() I just pun in a new air filter a few weeks ago and the thing was black with soot like you wouldn't believe. My brother is a VW technician and his exact words were..." F that thing...unplug it since you don't need it"

There is a guy on this board who makes kits to do the complete EGR elimination. A couple of plates and either fasteners or a clamp, or something. But, in order to be cost effective, he only makes them once a year. I asked. He said he will post when he makes up some new ones.
I want to take the whole stupid thing out. Clear up some space. |

gutless
I capped my egr valve. No difference. Can't get more then 3-4psi boost off of the turbo. Even with the waste gate unhooked. It's a CA model, guess I need to gut that tin can under the exhaust manifold.
