Trap Oxidizer

I relocated from SoCal to Weber County Utah and brought my '85 300 D along. It has a Particle Trap Oxidizer that my mechanic says needs to be replaced. My question is in 1985 did this county in this state require such a device and if not do I need one now? I get the idea from the MBCA forum that this may be a touchy issue but would just like to know where to go, like a state agency even, for an answer. Am trying to locate one with no luck so far.

Thanks,

Paul

Welcome to the forum.

If you truly have one of the last trap-ox in the world still on the vehicle, it is my understanding that you can bring it to a Mercedes dealer and they will replace it at no charge to you. You might even get a new turbo to go along with it.

The dealer is the first place to start to get this device eliminated. You may need to educate the dealer as to exactly what the device is. It's probably been that long since they have seen one.

letter

i have a letter that the previous owner saved, and it is from mercedes saying how the trap oxidizer needs to be replaced. if you pm me your email, i can send you a scan of it. you could take that to your dealer, so he has more of an idea what should be done, and that it is official.

Does the letter say that the trap oxidizer has to be replaced by another trap oxidizer or that it can/should be replaced by an oxidizer catalyst downstream of the turbo?

What's the date on the letter? Maybe it predates the campaign.

I met a fellow who takes his 85 300D or SD to Smythe European, the MB dealer in San Jose, CA, and he says that they've replaced the trap several times. They've never suggested that it should be replaced or removed.

Keep in mind that the trap and the catalyst look identical. Of course the dealer should know which is which. You don't need that junk anymore. Of course this is where I post my link.

They do? I'm not familiar with an 85 300D/SD. I described the 603 set-up which has the trap oxidizer before the turbo and the oxidizer catalyst downstream of the turbo.

letter is from December 1996, and says to replace the trap oxidizer with a Oxidation Catalyst.

I have the same set up on my car.
How do I tell if this has been changed? is there a way to get to a cheaper air filter set up if this is changed?
