603 engine water pump replacement
RE: 1987 300 TDT I'm reading the WIS in order to replace the water pump. It tells me to remove the alternator (that one's obvious why), remove the alternator bracket and then remove the entire water pump housing too. Do I really need to do that? I can't see why I have to remove the alternator bracket AND the water pump housing when I'm just doing the water pump. I already have the viscous fan clutch off too. It seems pretty straight forward at this point.

Maybe its to prevent the Alternator being soaked in Coolant.
Does the Alternator Bracket attach to the Water Pump Housing? I thought the housing had to be removed to clear the Water Pump impeller. While you are in there I would recommend checking the Brush Assembly on the Alternator. If it hasn't been changed then you might want to replace it while everything is accessible.

Anyone? Sixto/GSXR???
I figured the alternator should come out so it doesn't get soaked. It just seems odd that you have to remove the whole housing when it doesn't look necessary. I think the impellor will still fit...

I just replaced the water pump and put the alternator back first (I replaced the brush/regulator assy as suggested by Dervman, and see no reason you have to remove the pump housing! A little coolant won't hurt the alternator! If you've ever sprayed one at a car wash you doused it more water than will happen during water pump removal!
I am working thru the front with the radiator and condensor removed so its a clear shot ![]() I forgot to get the small drip tube for the bottom of the pump so I have that on order and will hope it goes on without having to remove the pump again (I always use Hylomar gasket compound to hold the gasket on)

The front of my engine is slightly differnet then you W124 guys. But I didn't need to touch the alt when I changed the pump.
Btw I usually say buy stuff from Phil, but I got an OE pump from my dealer for $80! ![]()

Actually, you do have to remove the alternator bracket and the entire water pump housing from the side of the engine. What a massive undertaking. Damn. Easily two-hours trying to find hidden bolts etc. Reason being the water pump loosens up nicely but you can't pull it past the opening to remove/replace it. The dipstick is in the way (didn't want to disturb the seal on that one by pushing it), and the entire pump housing is in the way...

603 Water Pump Replacemnt ?? Help !
Quote:
I'm replacing the radiator, condensor both fans water pump (and possibly) the thermostat. Radiator and condenser, both fans and clutch are out. Started removing my water pump. Idler shock off and 5 of 7 bolts out of the pump before stopping due to darkness. From reading this thread....looks like I'm about to hit a roadblock...I can see the oil dipstick is in the way. Is there an online step-by-step for water pump replacement for the 603.96 engine? WIS ????? Excuse this newbie question..... Is "WIS" a service manual. Where can I get one for my car. Conventional paper bood ...or online (PDF)? I can't even find the thermostat ?????????? Definitely need a manual and some engine diagrams. Warren C. |
