Home delivery of diesel...store in a tank at home?

How much per gallon could you save if you installed an above ground storage tank for diesel (say a 300 gallon tank) and had the fuel delivered?

Probably not cost effective but it would be nice to fill up at home.

Heck I already have a home heating oil tank around back.

Usually there is little price difference. The only advantage comes if you know prices are going to spike (i.e. big hurricane coming into the gulf) you can fill the tank in advance. Also have to be careful to keep the tank clean and moisture free which can become a challenge at times.

Why don't you just put home heating oil in that tank?

Keep track of how much you take from the heating oil tank and send the state board of equalization the appropriate road tax. Maybe the feds get a piece of it too. Keep the canceled checks in case there's roadside inspections like in Arizona.

You will be evading road tax, so don't get caught. If you do the feds will make it hurt. I have been told the fine is $1k for every gallon of tank capacity. But I am not sure thats true.

For my car that would cost me $23,500. For a W123 I think that would run $21,500.

Yeah I don't think I'd go the home heating oil route, though price of fuel jumped big time today where I live.

After listening to the hype on talk radio (and hearing about $5/gallon in Atlanta) it might be good to have a couple of hundred gallons of diesel on hand to avoid lines or shortages. It could happen right?

Around here, the hooligans are starting to syphon gas from unsecured vehicles (my nextdoor neighbor's van was ripped-off last weekend); Even with diesel, I can only imagine what riff-raff will be attracted by a 300 gallon tank on stands in your backyard.

And unfortunately who gets it will be based on the riff-raff's firepower versus the fuel owners.

One of my dad's business clients has a 1000 gallon tank under his garage somehwere in the bay area some time ago. I never met them or saw them but it was cheaper than at the pump at least when both our families bought 87 300SDL's. He had diesel delivered in bulk (I think there was a price break at 1000 gals. and drove a LOT naturally but never had to stop at the gas station.

I wonder how it would do with WVO and some sort of anti coagulant.

Well we don't have many hooligans roaming around in the backyard, for everyone else, there's the 12 gauge.

The local oil company was giving a 10% discount if you bought 500 gallons. That's now $.27/gallon.
