I know this might be an old subject but I was wondering what does eveyone fill their fuel filter with when installing a new one, I have heard every thing from Marvel Mystery oil to just fuel, and everything inbetween. Does it matter? and is any one thing better? Thanks

That about covers it. Just plain old fuel should work fine, everything else is annecdotal.

I second that . . . I have read of using purge yet I save that for the actual process so it can recirculate until it is nearly gone. I have always just used good ole diesel.

The more I read the more I think these fine engines would run on the oil from grass clippings if we could squeeze it out.

The 1993 300d 2.5L has is self-purging...I just reinstall the fuel filter..allow the engine to turn over about 10 seconds and then it fires right up...

I don't fill it with anything I just pump the primer pump and fire it up!

Actually, someone is way ahead of you on this one! There is a new diesel fuel being developed that uses the decay of vegetation process. This fuel is said to be even better since it doesn't have some of the temperature clouding properties of biodiesel. I read about this in a magazine called "Diesel Power" (mostly trucks) just this past weekend.

If you are filling your filter with anything, you need to find a way to put it in the right hole, which I believe is the center one. Otherwise, you are putting unfiltered fuel on the outlet side, which will go directly to your injectors. Keeping fuel out of the outlet side will be difficult without a device like that made by Racor (or is it Davco?) that threads in and funnels it only into the center. But I don't think they make one for M-B filters.
So I simply bleed the system using the hand pump after installing the filter.
