Fuel filter filled with??? at filter change?

I know this might be an old subject but I was wondering what does eveyone fill their fuel filter with when installing a new one, I have heard every thing from Marvel Mystery oil to just fuel, and everything inbetween. Does it matter? and is any one thing better? Thanks

I second that . . . I have read of using purge yet I save that for the actual process so it can recirculate until it is nearly gone. I have always just used good ole diesel.

The more I read the more I think these fine engines would run on the oil from grass clippings if we could squeeze it out.

The 1993 300d 2.5L has is self-purging...I just reinstall the fuel filter..allow the engine to turn over about 10 seconds and then it fires right up...

Actually, someone is way ahead of you on this one! There is a new diesel fuel being developed that uses the decay of vegetation process. This fuel is said to be even better since it doesn't have some of the temperature clouding properties of biodiesel. I read about this in a magazine called "Diesel Power" (mostly trucks) just this past weekend.

Don't run unfiltered fuel

If you are filling your filter with anything, you need to find a way to put it in the right hole, which I believe is the center one. Otherwise, you are putting unfiltered fuel on the outlet side, which will go directly to your injectors. Keeping fuel out of the outlet side will be difficult without a device like that made by Racor (or is it Davco?) that threads in and funnels it only into the center. But I don't think they make one for M-B filters.
So I simply bleed the system using the hand pump after installing the filter.

TedG,

I think the center hole of the secondary filter is the outlet so putting fuel in to the center hole will get unfiltered into the IP.

Powerservice additive

I changed both of my fuel filters last week, I filled up the spin on fuel filter with Powerservice, no pumping and it started right up. Stalled once after 10 seconds, then I restarted...no problems.

My car is running better ever (one month of ownership), much improved acceleration from a stop

I have done the same as Hugh for years....fill the filter (the whole thing!) with "Diesel Kleen" from Power Service or a comparable injector cleaner.
Take the opportunity to really blow out the deposits on the injectors and clean your IP. Pour the rest of the bottle into your fuel tank....you will benefit from this little remedial step immediately and in the long run....
Cheers,
FRED

did I mess mine up?

I recently changed my primary and secondary filters. I'm new to this and thought I knew what I was doing. However, now after reading this I see that I made a mistake. I filled the whole thing, center hole and outside holes, with an additive. One week later my car won't start and no one can figure out why. Could this have had an effect.

the thread for my starting woes is here:

How much for an IP?

thanks
