Question 300TD Diesel Fuel Consumption

Recently I estimated my 300TD's Estate fuel consumption at 6-7l/100Km outside town.

Does anyone know how much this car's Diesel engine takes while city driving? The traffic here is pretty heavy and it seems that I might need another car for everyday driving.

That mileage sounds too high. I calculated about 36 miles/gal (US), which is too high for a 300TD, especially in the city. I would expect closer to 25 mpg, at best, in the city.

What year 300TD are we talking about? I don't see it mentioned anywhere.

I happen to have the Owner's Manual in front of me for my 84 300TD. It lists fuel consumption as the following:

Urban: 10.4l/100km or 27.2m.p. Imp. gal

At 56mph: 8.0l/100km or 35.3 m.p. Imp. gal

At 75mph: 10.9l/100km or 25.9 m.p. Imp. gal

They list fuel consumption for the 4-speed manual and 5-speed manual non-turbo 300TDs too. The 5-speed is listed at 29.7mpg at 75mph vs the 4-speed at 27.2mpg at 75mph. The same car is listed at 25.7mpg at 75mph with the automatic transmission.

My 1981 wagon with 280,000 plus ( odo broken ).. got 27 miles per gallon from Elgin to Ft Worth going more than 75 mph. I filled up there, and at the same station back here (checked it each way )... I only gave $2000 for the car.. so no one was more surprised than I was... and I must say proud... LOL

Translating into US gallons:

Urban: 10.4l/100km or 27.2m.p. Imp. gal = 22.7 mpg US

At 56mph: 8.0l/100km or 35.3 m.p. Imp. gal = 29.4 mpg US

At 75mph: 10.9l/100km or 25.9 m.p. Imp. gal = 21.6 mpg US

Based on my 300D, these numbers sound reasonable to me.

He said these numbers were from the manual for his 84 300TD, I was comparing them to my 82 300D.

1984. At least it should be 1984. It came in the glove box for my 1983 300TDt. It covers the 200T, 230TE, 280TE, 240TD, 300TD and 300TDt. It doesn't have a date in it. It appears to have a lot of Euro information like the aux heater.

Now I understand... He didn't say what year, but 36 mpg (US) sounds too high for any 300TD in city conditions.

Edit: His profile says it's a 123.

Arrow Production year

My 300TD was manufactured in '79 and has a 617.912 diesel engine with a 4 speed manual gearbox.

It took 6l/100Km outside town (european roads) crusing at 70Km/h to 120Km/h and some 10% city driving. I measured that fuel usage on a 600Km trip 3 times (once was driven by someone else and got the same mileage).

I haven't measured city fuel consumption yet and I'm asking because the conditions are horrible here during "rush hours" - usually I have to drive bumper to bumper for more than 32Km/20 miles.

By the way, what would be the most economical/engine-friendly method of shifting gears on a 300TD (at which speed it's best to shift up to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear)?
