Bio - Methanol Steep Price & Supply ??
We did our first two test batches of biodiesel today and the second one worked. Couple of questions however:
1. We paid $27 for a five gallon bucket of Methanol. At 20% of the mass of WVO, that would still cost over $1.00 per gallon of bio. WHERE do you guys get it cheaper? 2. Can you use a fiberglass (insides) water heater or will the solution eat it away? 3. Do you guys use Lye with the Meth or KOH? (Potassium)? Thanks Don

yeah thats about right. we are paying 151 bucks for a 55 gal drum. got two ordered from wausau chemical.
having a problem finding lye. reports are that red devil is ending its mfg. of it 'cuz the meth amphet crowd uses it to make drugs. we tried a chem place we found at www.biodieselnow.com in the chgo area and the potassium hyd is 50 bucks for a 50 lb pail. i don't know about the fiberglass unit. try www.veggieavenger.com and look in the forum section. we recently switched to an 80 gal heater to make largeer batches. just in time for the fish dinner biz at the marina to fall off. how ironic.

My step dad gets our methanol in a 55 gallon drum for $110. Two dollars a gallon isn't that bad at all. I think he gets it from some kind of miniature go-kart place. Maybe little RC cars. I'll have to ask.

o, yeah. try a local dragstrip. they sell to competitors. maybe a speed shop also.
when you figure you are making say 24 gallons and using only 4 gallons of methanol and an 18 oz can of lye at 3.50 the the average cost is really only 61 cents. waaaaaaaaaayyyyy less than diesel @2.91-3.49/gal
