Lets Talk 617 Bolt on Fuel Filters....

Hi guys,
I have been chasing an issue with my 83 300D Turbo ever since I bought it.
THe car will start and run just fine for about 3-5 seconds, then all of a sudden the idle goes to pot, and often requires assistance via throttle to stay running. DO this for 2-3 mins and I drive off, and after running for about 3 -5 mins at speed, the car idles wonderfully, drives good although there is a little smoke at idle, but nothing to write home about. I have yet to adjust the valves and replace the tank strainer.

Since purchasing 'rag doll' I have:
Changed Both Fuel Filters
Changed all injector return line hoses with CLoth braided lines
2 Cans of DIesel Purge
Replaced Injector Return Lines and End Cap
Adjusted ALDA
Cleaned Banjo Bolts
Replaced Air Filter, Cleaned Hounsg and "J" tube which was disconnected from the Turbo
Misc Interior trim and cosmetics, Suspension etc.

SOmeone here suggested the Orings on the BOlt on fuel filters "Bolt" has some washers/orings to replace.

I went to the MB parts counter to get them yesterday, and they give me a O Ring and a Copper washer. Today, I removed the bolt on filter and the only things I see on the bolt are 2 had rubber gasket/orings on it. The rubber is not really an O ring but squared off on the sides. SO wheres this copper washer and Rubber Oring go?

I'm convinced I have an air leak coming in from somehwere, because of the first 5 seconds of smoothness, then it gets a bubble.....I see the cigar hose has some small cracks in it, so I'll be replacing that, as well as the suplly line into the inline filter.

Anyone have suggestions?

Shes coming to gether great. I used dieselgiants write up and repaired the odomter, and gave the needles a fresh coat of paint, and and rigged up the dimmer !

problem

if i were having this problem i would go after it in this
manner...

but what you are really saying is that your car has trouble idling until its
warmed up.....

1. i would replace both filters and the washer under the banjo bolt..

2. i would clean the injectors the way diesel giants says...

3. i would replace the cloth hoses and other hoses in that area.

4. i would take out my injectors in leave them in a bucket of parts cleaner
the real good stuff...

5. i would take my injectors and have them calibrated.

6. I would adjust the valves....

7. I would change the thermostat... (casue it needs to get up to temp)

8. I would clean the banjo bolt out on the back of the turbo...

9. I would change the air filter and make sure the filter housing was seated i am thinking air flow...

10. clean the tank strainer...

Those squared off rubber rings you see on the bolt used to be o-rings. I had a problem on my 300D where it was sucking air because of a trashed o-ring there. And as it turns out, not all even have the o-ring, so who knows. They only cost a couple of cents, so i'd start there.. Also you'll find that alot of fuel lines as they age get too imprinted by the barbs on the parts, and will never really seal very good. New fuel hose, new o-rings, new clamps, should solve your problems..

Thanks for the suggestions!

Blueranger
1. Yup, next on my list of things to do on the car, may go to the dealer to get them

2. Check, did that last week.

3. Check, has new cloth return lines. I have ordered a new cigar hose and a hose that the inline is connected to.

4. Hope things dont get to this point

5. See #4

6. Check, did that last week when I did the filters.

7. May Have to

8. Check, already did that

9. Check, hose wasnt even connected to the turbo when I brought the car home!

10. Check, I'll be doing that when the tank gets low.

Thanks!

The dealer is correct, it sounds like you have the wrong bolt. The bolt in my 603 has just two o rings on it, no crush washer.

I am going through this with my 617, granted its in a W126 but the filter housing should be about the same.

Their are two bolts and crush washers for that car, the VIN is needed to determine the proper one. I just ordered a new bolt to try and fix a fuel leak.

I would also suspect the rack dampner bolt.
