Yes.....and no. Welding usually makes them brittle fracture.

Exactly, what is it we are trying to do here ?

great idea, just doesnt work.

In all fairness to ez out's, I should have used a larger diameter ez out. I'm about 99% sure that's why it broke. Additionally, I should have known that the ez out was about to break by the amount of torque I was applying to it. All in all, I would say that about 50% of the time I use them they make the situation much worse, the other 50% of the time they work.

I got the ez-out out and I'm working my way back to where I started. The guys at the hardware store had a good laugh and then suggested some kind of diamond carbide round tip dremel bit for just $10.99, I destroyed it in the process but it worked. So I guess I'll try a leftie drill bit now, the bolt should come out of the pin fairly easily as I soaked it in PB before threading it into the pin.

New2MB,

I would still use heat. Coefficient of expansion of aluminum is 3X steel. You probably have a solid state defusion bond between the aluminum and steel. Heat may help break the bond.

I will try to heat it up but all I have is a propane torch so I'm not sure how much good it will do. Also, if I heat the aluminum up won't it expand in all directions making the hole smaller and further restricting movement of the pin? Sounds like something they would teach in school, my experience tells me I should heat it up though. The idea is to get the aluminum to expand and break the bond with the steel. I'll have this bastard out of there today one way or the other.

New2MB,

Another hint: use a quality Allen head screw. They are abouit 3 times as strong as a regular screw.

I was also thinking about which way the aluminum would expand. But when you heat a ring gear to put it on the flywheel, it gets a larger internal diameter when heated. But it may be different for a solid piece like a head.

With a propane torch you won't have about melting the aluminum.

it wont

get tighter with heat. and cause the aluminum expands at three times the rate of steel it cant hurt.

That's the kicker, I have to get a stronger bolt for the pin, thanks for the reminder I was just about to go to the hardware store.

Getting an ez out

Just about the only thing that will successful take out an ez out is a dental burr. Trust me, I have done it a thousand times before, but you cant jump in like a storm trooper on the ez-out. Dental burrs are some of the hardest materials I have ever used. Good Luck

Holy (*#&$(&@$#(&$@# I got it! I can't believe it, I actually got the whole damn pin out! The bolt inside the pin came out in two pieces, took about 3-4 hours of drilling and about 6 drill bits. I used a nice allen head bolt with washers and loads of PB to pull the pin nice and easy. It helps to have an idea of how much torque a bolt can withstand before yielding. Of course the most important part of the job was patience, which I typically have none of but I'm learning. Once again thank you very much for all the help!
