ps filter, does it have an o-ring?

Hello everyone,

My first post here, my car is a 1992 300d 2.5 turbo.

I did a ps fluid flush yesterday, but i was in a real hurry. The flushing process went fine, but when I dropped the new filter in, it made a metallic clank noise. At the time I did not think too much of it. I discarded the old filter without giving it much visual inspection.

Now, today I am having an uneasy feeling about that clank noise. Should the ps filter have an o-ring at it's base? I went back and pulled the new filter out -it has a recess in the base that looks like it could fit an o-ring.

There was no o-ring sitting beneath the new filter and i fear that I may have thrown the old o-ring out with the old filter.

Can anyone tell me whether the filter should be fitted with an o-ring or not.

Thanks.
