Cool

I'm a mechanic by trade and yes , I've found lots of notes over the years , I occasionally leave one too but usually it's like ' what are you reading the under side of the heater plenum for ? ' .

Or I write my intitials and the date inside to doors a fair bit since I work on and build , salvage - reconstructs .

If granny never forgets her seatbelt , then there shouldn't be any problem.....

I'd fix it but I've unplugged many a seat or seatblet sensor over the years , any older mechanics will ruefully recall the seatbelt / starter interlocks in ALL passenger cars sold in America , a mandate from the feds , most American Mfrs. made a simple thing but all the Germans had to make up these horrible
" logik Relaiys " so the valet parking guy wouldn't have to lift his butt up off the seat cushion to start the car... they didn't work well in the dealer when new and as the cars aged they were a REAL PIA...

BTW : anyone who worked on 50's & 60's vintage German cars saw _LOTS_ of swatsikas scratched or painted with glue guns etc. in the inner workings of the cars too .

I have the factory maintenance manuals on all my cars and I put notations in them regarding any modifications, different replacement parts, the odd bolt with left hand threads, etc. I figure the next owner, if he or she cares about the car as much as I do, will appreciate the info. The manuals always go with the car when it is sold.

I further carry this practice over to our home and our cabin, keeping notes about various maintenance requirements, wiring diagrams and locations of critical items. I also maintain a site plan for each that shows the location of utilities and other related items.

None of this takes much time to keep up to date and I'm sure the next owner will appreciate it. I know I certainly would have saved some time if the previous owner had done this.

just my $.02,
Wes

I read this post yesterday but felt the need to return to it today and share something. I am replacing a ballast in some ressesed lighting this morning. When I removed the fixture there was a note taped to the housing.

Honey, I will probably be gone before you need to replace this ballast again, Remember this circuit is not the kitchen breaker but the dining room breaker. I love you Frank

Wow, time for a beverage on that one

Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen...

I don't think you can sue someone because a 20 year old car has something broken on it. If you could, I'd be a millionaire by now!

I can see it now... Future owner 10 years down the line gets into accident, isn't wearing seat belt, gets severly injured. "Why didn't I wear my seatbelt? Well, I always put it on when the buzzing sound and red light tell me too, but I didn't that time, because there was no buzzer or light! Then I found a note, turned out the previous owner turned it off ON PURPOSE! How dare he sell me a 30 year old car with over 300,000 miles that has one tiny problem? I'm going to sue!"

Sounds pretty improbable.. But hey, we are a pretty sue-happy people, so you never know.

peace,
sam

I don't think the suit would be because something was broken.
It would probably be someone claiming that your info caused them to hurt themselves somehow.

Even if it was their own fault,
you can never underestimate the stupidity of a jury nowadays.

Ever see those stories about people who terrorize their neighborhood,
with constant trivial lawsuits over the most stupid things?
Even if they don't win many of them,
it's still a lot of aggravation and expense for the defendants.

( p.s. I see by your edit that you foresee your own scenarios )

I found $62 in an envelope, along with a bunch of Florida issued food stamps under the front seat in the 420 SEL.

I keep notepad documents on my computer outlining date, mileage, notes, and repairs for each entry.

I record everything.

I figure someone might want the info someday if the car ever changes hands. I plan on keeping the 300SD until it gets totaled. Its showing no signs of giving up.

If the engine starts getting weak, I'll bring her back to life

I find lots of cigarette notes, etc. in my car from the PO.

Visited the wrecking yard one day and found enough change in a car to pay for my entry fee

IF my wife found the funny looking balloon I would have some major explaining to do.....to which likely no answer would be acceptible.
